We had an awesome time at The Birthday Massacre show earlier this week at the Ace of Spades. So many great bands performed including one of of our local favorites, Awoken Shadows and two spectacular sets by The Red Paintings and New Years Day. Another highlight of the night was catching the energetic set of Snow White Smile. They have a very refreshing sound that blends industrial and alternative edge to rock. We have had the great pleasure of seeing New Years Day nearly half a dozen times in just the last couple years and on Wednesday we saw them once again as they returned to the Ace of Spades as they are out on tour with The Birthday Massacre. New Years Day have the knack of putting on a whole of a performance every time and this time, I believe they outdid themselves. They were absolutely on point the entire night with energy abound and truly reaching a peak of perfection with their music.
Ash Costello is truly an amazing vocalist and artist, her stage presence captivates the crowd and she invites them to join in her in singing the songs. The audience was fully engaged from start to finish. Anthony is a madman on bass and you he has great powerful backing vocals. Nikki Misery is absolutely stellar in his fierce guitar shredding as he is bouncing around the stage with leaps and jumps that will have your eyes wide open.
Nick Rossi unleashes his adrenaline as he turns into beast mode on the drums, delivering precision drumming with every beat. With the addition of Tyler Burgess on guitar, he appears to be the perfect match for the energy that this band brings out. He was wild on stage and together they created an intense level of excitement that I haven’t seen in a while. Check out the photos from our Rockin Ryan of their set:

For now, make sure to check the remaining dates of the tour and don’t miss them when they are coming to a venue near you. If you don’t already have it, I would strongly encourage you to pick up their latest EP, EPIDEMIC. The EP really displays the great musicianship of this band and how they have evolved through their sound. They really bring out the passion in their songs as well as when they perform live. This is a band that speaks volumes of truth in their music and give you a good dose of hard ROCK at the same time.

We loved it when they came to Slim’s in San Francisco on the We Love Tour featuring Combichrist and William Control. They delivered a high energy intense set that had the crowd in awe. I think they set a record for crowd surfing during a set at Slim’s which rarely tolerates. It was probably the most energetic crowd that I have witnessed at their performances, full on mosh pit, crowd participation and infectious passion raging through the crowd. What an amazing night for music at the Ace of Spades in Sacramento it was yesterday. We will be bringing you our full coverage of all the bands from the night but let’s start it off with our feature on The Birthday Massacre. Hailing from Canada, this hybrid new wave, gothic rock and electronic infused band really made an impression on Sacramento!
It was a stormy day that left the roads flooded in some parts of Sacramento but that didn’t stop the dedicated fans from coming out to the show. After braving the 3 1/2 hour drive in rain and dodging the lightning storm, we were glad to finish off the night with a stellar set from The Birthday Massacre. Their music is as if they gave a refreshing vibrant makeover to the 90’s new wave synth dates, without feeling dated. Their energy was infectious as they each have a cinematic stage presence. We were treated to many of their songs from their recently released album, Superstition and each one had you wanting more. I was hoping to pick up the new album but unfortunately (well, fortunate for them) they had sold out of them! You can head over to iTunes here and pick it up online. I am so excited to announce the new band, Budderside from one of our favorite vocalists, Patrick Stone. Patrick caught our eye when we saw him perform with Steven Adler’s Adlers Appetite at The Red Devil Lounge in SF a couple years back. He really grabbed our attention with his powerful vocals and a stage presence that made him the ideal frontman.
His new band, Budderside will feature Patrick Stone, Rich Sacco, and Michael Stone. It is still in the early stages but check out the video teaser which will get you ready to rock! I can’t wait to hear more and one thing is for sure, it is going to fuckin ROCK!

It is so easy to lose touch with a friend or lose a connection with someone or something that made an impact on you. Life gets busy, we have obstacles to overcome and sometimes it just simply happens. But remember that feeling when you reconnect with that someone special or pull out your favorite cassette tape from the past and your passion is renewed in an instant? That is exactly how I feel right now as I have rekindled my love for Ionia.
I first came across Ionia as they performed with Smile Empty Soul back in May of 2012. I remember being completely blown away by them and I picked up their CD and played it the whole long ride home from Sacramento. Time passed and unfortunately with my busy schedule, I didn’t stay connected to their music. But that won’t happen again.
New York City Rockers, Ionia have released an epic cinematic video for their song, They Look Like Big Strong Hands Don’t They and it is well deserving of your time and attention. The song is absolutely captivating as the emotionally driven lyrics just seem to reach out to you and pick you up from where ever you have been or whatever you are struggling with. It is stellar and will take you on a musical journey of emotions, leading you right to where you belong. Their music will feed your soul. Check out the video here:
The song is their second single off Captain Humility and you can pick up it up on iTunes. Ionia are currently in the studio recording their new EP, Postcards From The Edge: Chapter 1. Delta 32, with Mike Sapone (Brand New, Taking Back Sunday) which I am very excited about.

It is pure blues and rock n roll and it is addictive.

From the studio to the band, there is quite an amazing amount of talent put into this stellar album. The album was recorded at the legendary NRG Studios, mixed by Steve Hardy (Blue October, Vertical Horizon, Joe Bonamassa, and many more), mastered by iconic Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Ramones, Pantera, and many, many more). The album is produced by Bill Schleifer and Isaac Hasson. It truly is a work of art and we are even treated to Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dizzy Reed (Guns n Roses) who plays keyboards on their song 10 Long Years.

We have been telling you a lot about The Killing Lights, the new music project by Michael Vampire, widely known for his work as frontman in Vampires Everywhere. The day has finally arrived for the release of their self titled EP and it was definitely worth the wait. The five-song release was produced & engineered by DJ Black & Michael Vampire, mixed by Erik Ron (Motionless In White, Escape The Fate) and mastered by Sterling Sound NYC.
The EP starts right off with Until I Bleed which delivers a straight up dose of rock n roll, complete with some old school style rock guitar solos and wrapped in a modern hard rock edge. As Michael says about the song, “Writing this song was liberating for me,I was reminiscing about all the fucked up shit that happened to me over the last five years. Everyone has their breaking point and this was mine. I just started scribbling words down on paper that eventually became the intro and I knew that this song would make an impact and hopefully help people in the same situation.”
The next track takes it even a bit heavier with Barely Breathing and has you swirling in a frenzy of double bass, powerful vocals dancing with harmonies and backing chants. It brings out a strong anthemic feel that will awaken your senses and invigorate you.
Crashing Down is absolutely my favorite track off the EP and I have already found myself compelled to put it on replay for most of the afternoon. It bleeds out passion in a dark haunting way as if your emotions and feelings are being felt captive, a very emotive song for me.
Next up is, Lies Spreading Like Fire which was the first single released off the EP and really made a strong impression on the listeners. It immediately had everyone excited for this new chapter of Music for Michael. They also released an epic video for it. “I am beyond excited to finally release the ‘Lies Spread Like Fire’ video,” said Michael. “We all fight our own demons from time to time, and this is about standing up after the fight. We wanted to keep it as raw as possible, which I feel we achieved using L.A. street culture as the main storyline and aesthetic. This video is for all the fans and people that have stuck with me this past year. Together we will change everything.”

The EP ends with Conversations and is another musical gem. This track starts off with an ethereal style intro amid backing vocals/screams. The song transcends through a celestial journey that will leave you in anticipation of more new music from The Killing Lights.
