We brought you our coverage of Asking Alexandria as they made a stop in San Francisco for The Moving On Tour. Now, we can’t wait to tell you about the opening band out on the tour, The Family Ruin. We have been featuring this amazing rock band from the UK all year long. We brought you our review of their kick ass album, Dearly Departed which was released in September and we couldn’t wait to finally catch them perform live.

One thing is for sure, they delivered an amazing kick ass set at the Regency Ballroom. I love it when a band that I really enjoy listening to can match the same intensity of their music as they do live on stage. This is one band that definitely has no problem conquering that battle. They blew me away and had me eagerly wanting to see them again soon! Check out more photos of their set by our Rockin Ryan:

From the moment they hit the stage and until they walked off to greet fans at their merch booth, they captivated the crowd with their high energy rock. To get to see them perform live my favorites from their album like Let’s Go, Let It Burn, and Bring Out Your Dead. The crowd quickly fell in love with them and you know that many concert goers left with The Family Ruin being their new favorite band!

Concert Review – Black Veil Brides – Black Mass Tour 2014 – O2 Academy Brixton, London, Oct. 4th 2014

Contributed by Alexandra –  Twitter; https://twitter.com/lexi22473_b

Arriving at the venue, there’s already a big crowd lining up around the block. The end of the line reached the start and they asked everyone to get closer together, so there’s enough place for everyone to queue.

With opening the doors at 7 pm, the crowd was off and started moving. People with O2 phones got in first and the rest followed through quickly. Inside, Drama Club already started their set. The steady beat of their tunes got the crowd going. Part of their set was a remix of Andy Black’s (Andy Biersacks moniker), “They Don’t Need To Understand“. If they didn’t have everyone on their side, now they had. Even though they don’t play a classic rock sound they fit in pretty good.

Next on were UK residents Fearless Vampire Killers. They were obviously known to many people. Singers/guitarists Kier Kemp and Laurenence Beveridge switch singers position after a few songs. Good choice bringing them along. With this set-list they were the ones which are closest to the music Black Veil Brides play.

Next up came Attila. They canceled their own headline tour through the UK to be able to play this set with Black Veil Brides. They played an energetic set. Their singer Fronz knows how to get the crowd going and several time encourages them to do circle pits and simply just to party with them, having a good time.

Now everyone was ready for the headliners – Black Veil Brides. With every microphone that was put on stage and everything moving they cheered. When CC finally climbed up to his drum kit, the crowd went wild. He was followed by the rest of the band and they immediately started their set with “Heart Of  Fire“, one of the two already released songs of their self titled album “Black Veil Brides“. The stage had two stairs left and right from a podium where the drum kit was placed on in the middle of the stage on a huge stack of Marshall amps. At the end of each stair there were monitors where sometimes fire, the band logo and other pictures were displayed. Next on was a well known song for everyone “I Am Bulletproof“ from their latest album “Wretched and Divine“.

Andy Biersack, well known to hold unforgettable speeches, greeted everyone and told them how much they love to be back in the UK. There were more of those speeches throughout the show. He never tired to thank the BVB Army (that’s what their fanbase is called) for their support throughout the last 5 years. That all of this wouldn’t have been possible, if they didn’t stand beside the band as much as they do. The BVB Army is a really dedicated fanbase throughout the world.

Watching the band play, you could see how much fun they had on stage and how much they love their job and also their fans. Jinxx, playing the guitar and also every other string instrument the band uses in their songs, wore a „I love London“ shirt, which was exactly what everyone felt by watching them play.

Next up came a song, they never played live in the UK before. It’s from the EP „Rebels“ and is called „Coffin“. It was received with a great cheer from the crowd. It was followed by another live debut, the second one of the upcomping album, that will be released worldwide on October 27th. It’s called „Faithless“. It’s only been released for about two weeks, but the crowd already knew every word.

Their set included some more of the new songs from “Black Veil Brides“ that were so far only known to a small crowd of people that were invited to a pre-listening-party about 3 weeks ago in London. They played “Good Bye Agony“ a slow song and “Last Rites“, which made everyone a bit more excited for the record release in 2 weeks.

Black Veil Brides also played some songs from their debut-album “We Stitch These Wounds“, like the breakthrough song of their career “Knives and Pens“, which has over 62 million clicks so far on Youtube and “Sweet Blasphemy“.

Like at most rock shows there also was a drum solo. The set list included a good mix of every record they released so far and the one that will be out soon. No other cover songs this time.

They closed the set with “Fallen Angels“ and finalized it with “Love Isn’t Always Fair“ and their fairly popular song “In The End“, which is a perfect ending to a fantastic show with amazing lighting, pyros and confetti for the final tunes.

Black Veil Brides clearly evolved with every record they made and every tour the play. Ready now to play big venues. They promised to come back to the UK soon and I’m pretty sure they will….

Their UK-tour ends Oct. 17th in Leeds. The US-Tour starts Oct. 21st in Niagara Falls, NY.

The time has arrived! The UK bad ass band, The Family Ruin have released their album, Dearly Departed on KBB Records.  In honor of the release, we are pleased to repost our review of this must have album!  This is one album that we have been so excited for you to all hear. It is definitely one killer album filled with high energy tracks and a great display of musicianship by these five guys.  Drummer Dom White had this to say of the release,We’re so excited to finally unleash Dearly Departed to the world! This album is all about living life on the edge, picking yourself up no matter how many times you get knocked down and partying like there’s not a care in the world. We hope you all love it as much as we do – we can’t wait to bring it to the stage later this year! Welcome to the family!”

* * ALBUM REVIEW * *

The Family Ruin have really been garnering a lot of well deserved attention since singing with KBB Records, the new record label of Asking Alexandria’s Ben Bruce and co-manager Kyle Borman. The Family Ruin have a very fresh new sound complete with hard and heavy riffs blended with infectious harmonies, where they blend their metal and alternative influences with melodic hard rock. There is something for everyone in their sound. Think about a mix of Avenged Sevenfold with Escape the Fate. Dearly Departed is definitely one of our Top Albums of the Year for 2014!

The album starts right off with the fist-in-the-air chant of the rockin track Bring Out Your Dead.Hang on tight, you are about to take an incredible ride fueled with guitar heavy riffs, powerful vocals and get instantly hooked.  Things get kicked up a notch with the Leech which has a Bullet For My Valentine style intro taking you into a M. Shadows vibe and even a hint of raspy vocals like Josh Todd in the chorus. This song just bleeds energy and is definitely one of my favorites. Of course, you will find me saying that about every song because this album features 14 outstanding tracks. It is nice to see a band put out a full album with songs that are varied in their own style and don’t blend together. I am loving this album and it has been a mainstay on my regular playlist for a few weeks now!

Cirque Du Sin has some amazing whirling guitars that grab your attention. Another one of my fave songs is Let’s Go which I can easily see make it’s fast rise on the Active Rock chart and onto the airwaves. Here is the lyric video for Let’s Go:

Us Against the World has a cinematic intro and powerful vocals with emotionally driven lyrics that create such emotion. The song seamlessly blends an alternative edge into the hard rock style, another great stand out track. The ambient ethereal intro of Battle for the Sun transitions you into the face paced frenetic drums that I love. The vocals and battle style lyrics create such an intensity and energy that takes you to the edge.

Haunting highlights the amazing vocals that capture a true rawness and vulnerability and the mysterious backing vocals create such an illusive presence. Broken Hands once again has you appreciating the musicianship of the band, as they blend their hard rock style with an alternative edge and in no way, does it seem forced. They flow easily with melodies and hooks.

Let It Burn was the first single they released and immediately caught everyone’s attention. It is a heavy hard rock track with fierce guitars, powerful vocals, precision drumming and solid bass lines. It was the perfect introduction for people to The Family Ruin. Check out the lyric video for the song here:

The intro on Where We Fall is just purely bad ass as you dance amid adrenaline filled vibe laced with a sweet melody. It is like a rush to your heart and the sigh after, all at once, really great track. Sonder is the crowning finale to the album as it gathers all of your emotions into a cathartic closure. It might be the last act for this album but will have you looking forward to more by The Family Ruin.

I have a great band to tell you about for some energetic aggressive pop punk that will get you pumped up and ready to start your day off right. I am talking about Nine Volt Heart from the UK. Nine Volt Heart is Mikey Lord on vocals/guitar, Paul Norfolk on guitar, Ed Truby on bass and Alex Sheldon on drums. These four bring together a fresh new take on punk infused with some melodic pop rock styles.  The perfect combo to get you moving. We had the opportunity to interview Nine Volt Heart and are pleased to bring that interview to you here:

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Music Junkie Press: We are excited about the release of your album The Miracle Kids. This album brings a lot of great energy out and a great dose of pop and punk! What was the inspiration behind this album?

Mikey: Cheers! The album is built around a lot of stories I had, all set in this world where a nuclear apocalypse had taken place and people that had survived were trying to rebuild some sort of life. The songs on this album all come from different points in stories or different characters individually.

Music Junkie Press: Tell us about the band name Nine Volt Heart and how you all formed?

Mikey: The band name is something we’ve always had as a sort of ‘damn this has to be a song title’ thing, but it got to the point where we were sick of having crappy band names and picked that. It fits our style and our sound and we really dig it. We’ve been a band in various versions since about 2011, but Paul joined last year and that’s the line up we’ve been with since.

Music Junkie Press: You have a great punk feel to your music which I love, who were some bands that inspired you the most? Mikey – Thanks! Well there’s the usuals that people say, like the Sex Pistols and the Ramones, and Black Flag and Misfits were important for us. We’re teenagers, so Green Day’s totally in there. My Chemical Romance would definitely be the biggest one.

Ed: We’ve definitely been inspired by countless bands spanning just as many genres! Ranging from bands like Blink-182 to heavier bands, and I think this is shown throughout the album!

Paul: I think there are tons of bands out there that have inspired us, but some of the most inspiring would be bands such as my chemical romance, 30 seconds to mars and blink 182.

Music Junkie Press: All of you being so young and talented musicians, what advice can you give to other young musicians who struggle with the pressure of trying to fit into a music genre checkbox and pressured to play a more “popular” style of music?

Paul: I think they should just play the music they enjoy playing instead being pressured into any more popular genres. If they enjoy listening to and playing the music they do, so will other people out there.

Mikey: I don’t really agree that there is that pressure for young musicians, there’s a culture now of creativity and being original and doing your own thing which is really cool. My advice though, would be to just play what comes naturally and don’t give a shit what anyone says about it. If you like playing what you’re playing then keep playing it, cause if you don’t enjoy it then what’s the point?

Ed: I’d say play the types of music that you enjoy playing! If you don’t enjoy the music that you’re playing then you can’t put any proper passion into it! But then again don’t be afraid to compromise!

Alex: Don’t bow to pressure, just play what you want to play and enjoy yourself, ‘popularity’ isn’t everything!

Music Junkie Press: A Waste of Dreaming is an awesome track, can you tell us more about that song?

Mikey: Thank you! A lot of the lyrics for that song were inspired by George Orwell’s ‘1984’, and the film ‘The Road’. I’m making headway into the book for 1984, but I saw a stage production of it that hit me like a train and I walked out of it with all these ideas, and they turned into A Waste Of Dreaming. It’s the last song that got written for the record – we announced the album release with all the tracklistings etc before we even finished recording that song. The story in it just seemed to fit perfectly with all the other stuff that was going on on the record, and it added another dose of aggression which was cool.

Ed: That was actually the last song that we put on the album. The album was practically finished then A Waste of Dreaming got written and we all loved it!

Music Junkie Press: Do you currently have any upcoming shows you can tell us about and will you be making it out to the US soon?

Mikey: This Friday we’re playing at the Leeds Wardrobe as part of the Futuresound Competition 2014 to win slots at Leeds + Reading! After that we’re on a bit of a down low period, due to people going away over summer and stuff. We’ll be keeping active and doing acoustic stuff where we can, check our website for show announcements here: http://www.ninevoltheart.co.uk/shows I don’t know about the US, we’re barely big enough for our own shoes in West Yorkshire. Let alone the rest of England. We’d love to get over there someday though.

Music Junkie Press: If someone was going to be seeing you in concert for the first time, what could you tell them they could expect at Nine Volt Heart show?

Alex: Lots and lots of energy! And noise.

Paul: I think at our shows you can expect alot of energy and catchy songs varying from pop punk to heavier punk rock. I think our shows have something everyone can enjoy and have a good time

Ed:  A lot of energy, a heck of a lot of jumping and the occasional mosh pit!

Mikey:  Energy’s a running theme here, so yeah that.

Music Junkie Press: Another song from the EP that really shines is breathe?, it has such emotionally driven lyrics. Can you tell us more about that song?

Mikey:  That song is a sort of drop in on the story that runs from A Waste Of Dreaming. It’s written from the point of view of someone trying to force himself to believe and appreciate a government and leadership that he can’t help but know is corrupt and lying to him. He’s trying to make the choice between living comfortably and believing in this false leadership, or attempting to live the life that he wants to live and learning as much as he can about the world.

Music Junkie Press: If Nine Volt Heart could be a comic book, what would each of your superhero names and super powers be?

Mikey: I just finished my Gold DofE expedition and came back all sunburnt, so I think my superpower would be to be able to sweat suncream (sunscreen). I’d be Factor 50 Man.

Ed: I’d be procrastination man and my power would just be to pause time so I could chill and do important stuff later.

Alex: Gingerman, I’d give everyone Ginger hair. Sounds more like a villain to be fair though.

Music Junkie Press: We saw the great video for The 45_Slow, love it! Will you be working on any music videos and if so, can you tell us for which song?

Mikey: I think we wanna make something for The Miracle Kids, and there’s loads of ideas getting thrown about at the moment for it – hopefully that’ll happen this summer.

Music Junkie Press: If you could take a song from a completely different genre and turn it into a Nine Volt Heart style what might that be?

Ed:  I’d love to do duality by slipknot! It was the first properly heavy song I learnt on bass and I fell in love with the speed and the technicality of the bass line, so I reckon we could do that!

Paul:  I’d love to play a James Taylor song, i’m a big fan. I’d probably choose to do Carolina in my mind, I love that song.

Mikey: Fairytale Of New York would be insane. We’d probably absolutely kill the song but it would be fun.

Alex:  I think ‘Trouble’ by Taylor Swift would be a laugh to do.

Music Junkie Press: If we could peak into your Ipod, what artist or song might we be most surprised at finding in there?

Ed:  For me that would probably be Eminem! I love Eminem, his lyrics are so powerful yet still relatable, and I always feel Eminem isn’t your standard rapper, there just seems to be something that sets him above other rappers in my opinion.

Paul: I have the latest album, same trailer different park, by the Texan country singer Kacey Musgraves, and it’s a fantastic album

Mikey:  I have a lot of Brian Eno on my phone. I really dig him.

Alex:  Probably the large amount of classical stuff on there, it’s calming stuff y’know.

Music Junkie Press: Lastly, what would you like to share with your fans and audience?

Nine Volt Heart currently has their new album, The Miracle Kids out now. You can pick up the 12 track album on their bandcamp page here. You will love it since it features a variety of tracks from the amped up pop punk anthem of the title track, The Miracle Kids to the emotionally driven song of breathe? to the kick ass track of Teenage Fantasy and everything in between. They really remind me of another young pop punk band that I fell in love with many, many years ago; Material Issue. Check out a cool video for one of my favorite songs from Nine Volt Heart, The 45_Slow here:

The UK bad ass band, The Family Ruin has been confirmed as support to Crown The Empire on their headlining fall tour. The ‘Welcome To The Resistance Tour’ begins August 30th in Anaheim, CA. Special guests on this run will also include Volumes, Secrets, and Ice Nine Kills.

Earlier this year we announced the signing of The Family Ruin to KBB Records and a new album is in the works. They have recently released their lyric video for their first  track, Let It Burn which is set to be featured on their upcoming album. Check it out here:

Check out the tour dates below and make sure to not miss them when they come through your town.  Ticket sales launch Friday June 27th, visit www.facebook.com/thefamilyruin for more details.

Stay tuned for their new album this Fall. The album is set to release later this year on KBB Records and we are all looking forward to the new music! The band says about their label, “We’re really hyped to have joined KBB Records. We know this label has been put together by some of the hardest working dudes in the field – Ben and Kyle have endless experience in all aspects of the industry and their vision is inspirational. We’re currently in the studio finishing up our debut album for release later this year, and it is sounding sick. We can’t wait to get out on the road and have everyone check it out. Keep your ears to the ground, big things are coming!”
