What an amazing night for music at the Ace of Spades in Sacramento it was yesterday. We will be bringing you our full coverage of all the bands from the night but let’s start it off with our feature on The Birthday Massacre. Hailing from Canada, this hybrid new wave, gothic rock and electronic infused band really made an impression on Sacramento!

It was a stormy day that left the roads flooded in some parts of Sacramento but that didn’t stop the dedicated fans from coming out to the show. After braving the 3 1/2 hour drive in rain and dodging the lightning storm, we were glad to finish off the night with a stellar set from The Birthday Massacre. Their music is as if they gave a refreshing vibrant makeover to the 90’s new wave synth dates, without feeling dated. Their energy was infectious as they each have a cinematic stage presence. We were treated to many of their songs from their recently released album, Superstition and each one had you wanting more. I was hoping to pick up the new album but unfortunately (well, fortunate for them) they had sold out of them! You can head over to iTunes here and pick it up online. With spotlight songs like Divide, Superstition and Surrender you are going to love it.

Check out the photos from our Rockin Ryan of their set:

There are still several dates left on the tour, so if they are coming to a venue near you, do your best to try and make it out to a show!

The Sounds

This week our Tuesdays Travels pick takes us to Malmo, Sweden. Sweden; the home of IKEA, ABBA and Absolut Vodka. Now we have one more thing to thank Sweden for, the incredible new wave infused rock by The Sounds.  Their music is described as indie rock/new wave but I think they can’t be categorized since they have a sound all on their own. The female fronted vocalist, Maja Ivarsson reminds me of a mix of Terri Nunn and Debbie Harry.  Their songs are energetic and fun and will have you moving and enjoying life within seconds of listening.

The Sounds is Maja Ivarsson on Vocals, Felix Rodriguez on Guitars/Vocals, Johan Bengtsson on Bass,
Jesper Anderberg on Keys/Guitar/Vocals and Fredrik Blond on Drums.

Weekend

The Sounds recently released their album, “Weekend” on October 29th, 2013 and it is spectacular. They have described this album as a bit of a rebirth of the band.  Jesper Anderberg, keyboardist/guitarist explains, “Weekend is more of a back to basics album, I was primarily looking for a groove when I started writing this album – a groove based on five members who have been playing music together for a long time. We weren’t looking to over think the song writing, and especially wanted to make it sound like we just hit the switch on the amps and just started playing the songs.”  The album is great, a couple of my favorites are Take it the Wrong Way, Weekend, Outlaw, and the very fun Young and Wild reminds me of my love for the 90’s music. They have succeeded in taking ’90s inspired music and breathed a fresh new life to it and I am hooked! You can pick up your copy of “Weekend” on Itunes or Amazon.

The Sounds are busy touring in Europe and we hope they return back here to the States soon. Make sure to visit their social media sites and stay up to date on their tour info, details and latest news.
