Hemming (aka Candice Martello) was first introduced to the world through VH1’s Make or Break : The Linda Perry Project as one half of the Philadelphia punk duo Omar. Make or Break was developed by superstar producer and songwriter Linda Perry as the antithesis to reality music shows. Martello joined the show as part of a band, but it was her solo work and a song called “Vitamins” that caught Perry’s attention and started Martello on the journey of finding and developing the voice of Hemming. At the conclusion of the show Martello was presented with the opportunity to make a record with Perry that will be coming out on Perry’s label (Custard Records) this Spring.
Hemming’s unique songwriting stamp is her ability to beautifully personify inanimate objects. The idea for “Vitamins” came to her while doing the regular morning routine of taking her daily vitamin. The song is about relying on something outside of yourself, whether that be material goods, substances or another person, to be happy and fulfilled. The song was recorded three different ways before getting it right. The initial attempt included very experimental orchestrations, but the experimentation diminished the songs emotion. As an acoustic track the sound didn’t quite capture the beauty of the lyrics, and the final product was a combination of the two, a simple and subtle arrangement that allows the strength of the lyrics and the uniqueness of Hemming’s voice to shine. Check out the song here and download it on iTunes here:

Very creative and quite unique style, definitely a fave of mine. Check it out here:
Make sure to pick up the EP, which is available on iTunes and Amazon. Stay tuned for her new album set to release in Spring 2015. Also check out our article on the single by Linda Perry’s alter-ego BluStone.
October is Anti Bullying month where we try to bring attention and STOMP Out Bullying. Sadly, it was only two years ago this month where we brought you the tragic story of Amanda Todd’s suicide due to bullying. Many artists and musicians are doing what they can to raise awareness to bullying and help to eradicate it!
One of my favorite new bands, Hunter Valentine have released a music video for their song, Nowhere to Run as they teamed together with STOMP Out Bullying in an effort to raise awareness this October. The video is stellar and the song is truly touching and provides hope to those who struggle or are facing any challenges. It is an amazing track and is soon to be one of my favorite songs on my playlist. Check out the video here:
I hope you do your part this month in an effort to put an end to bullying. Reach out to someone who you think might need to talk or are battling with bullying. If you witness or see someone being bullied speak up, you just might be the voice to put an end to their suffering. On October 6th you can put on a BLUE shirt for BLUE SHIRT DAY World Day Of Bullying Prevention. We can show our support and as STOMP Out says, “help to put an end to bullying, cyberbullying, other digital abuse, hatred, racism and homophobia and STOMP Out Bullying everywhere! In schools, communities, at work, & on social media pages“. People may ask, “What does wearing a blue shirt do?” What it does is show your solidarity to this cause, people may ask about why so many are wearing blue which opens discussion about the cause. It is a way to educate people about how devastating bullying can be and how we can work together in saving lives.
We recently did an interview with Hunter Valentine drummer, Laura Petracca and are pleased to repost here:

Music Junkie Press:Thank you very much for taking the time out to talk with us here at Music Junkie Press! First, we have to say, LOVING THE NEW SINGLE, “Burn With It.” The passion and honesty in that song shines through, was it an emotional process when you were writing it, especially being under the microscope of a TV show LP Project?
Laura:Kiyomi and Linda wrote this song and it sounded like an intense process. I saw Kiyomi writing and rewriting the lyrics, ripping pages out of her book. I came in to add drums and backing vocals. At that point the structure had been set, just needed arranging and swagger. That’s what drummers are the best at.
Music Junkie Press: When I saw Hunter Valentine on the first episode, I was blown away by your sound and quite upset that I didn’t know about you sooner! What I really loved by the end of the show, is the dedication and passion that you two, Kiyoimi and Laura have for your music and you truly are making the exact music you want to. You stand your ground for what you believe in. What advice could you give to other young artists who are struggling with that battle?
Laura:The most important part of being an artist is to stay true to who you are and what you believe. Your gut will always know what is right.
Music Junkie Press:You recently played at Shedonism in Las Vegas a couple weeks ago, how was that for you all?
Laura: I love Shedonism! We played the pool party a couple years ago and had a blast. This year we were booked to play the closing party in a really cool downtown Las Vegas bar. The fans that came out were singing all the words to the songs. That’s one of the most amazing experiences, that’s how you know you’ve made it.
Music Junkie Press: Hunter Valentine are about to embark in the Ladykillers Tour which kick off at the end of September. Are you looking forward to getting back out on the road?
Laura: I can’t wait to get back out on the road and especially with our friends Sick Of Sarah. We are doing the second round of the Lady Killer Tour. The first time we went out was a major success. Also one of the funnest tours hahaha! Everyone, be prepared for the time of your life.
Music Junkie Press:What is something that you like to do when you first arrive in to a new town on tour?
Laura: The band loves to eat. So naturally the first thing we like to do is eat what is popular in that city, even if it’s fried pickles dipped in vinegar or pig ears baked with cheese.
Music Junkie Press:With your dedicated fanbase, who love to show their appreciation for your gift of music, what is something that they can bring to you when you are out on the road?
Laura:What I want the most from the fans is a rowdy crowd dancing and enjoying the music. If you’re meaning materialistic, then whatever they want. We have received some amazing artwork and also some great care packages with food and drinks. We love our fans/friends and who they are so I’ll leave it to their imagination.
Music Junkie Press:Will you be adding more dates to the tour, (hint, California!!) or is there another leg of the tour planned?
Laura: We are possibly adding a few more east coast dates but unfortunately for the rest of this year, we won’t be coming back west. Our plan is to get in the studio ASAP so that we can give you new music to rock out to. We will be out on a second leg out west, early next year.
Music Junkie Press:You really bring a great vibrant energy when you perform on stage, do you have any preshow rituals to harness that energy?
Laura: Well I like to jump around to loosen up my body and limbs. Also I like to warm up on a drum pad. And then the full band does vocal warm ups, a lot of alleluia and bumble bees. And sometimes the odd whiskey will appear pre show.
Music Junkie Press:Here at Music Junkie Press, we are strong believers of how music helps, heals, inspires, and so much more. Is there a song or an artist that you can remember that helped you through a particular time and can you share a bit about that?
Laura: When I was a kid, I used to listen to all different types of music. One of my inspirations when growing up was Queen. I was a clever little girl and set up a sound system in my room, at the age of 8, and would crank Killer Queen or Stone Cold Crazy. Queen used to make me feel like I could do anything. This is one moment where I knew I wanted to be a star and no one was going to stop me.
Music Junkie Press: I know that many of your new fans are familiar with you Kiyomi and Laura, can you introduce us to the rest of the band that will be out on tour with you?
Laura: We are lucky to have two amazing musicians blessing the stage with us. Leanne Bowes (bass, backing vocals) has been playing with us the last year and a half. Leanne is a sweetheart and also a bad ass bass player. Lisa Bianco (lead guitar and keys) is the newest member. She’s a fire cracker and I can’t wait for fans to meet her. I have a fellow Italian on the road now, that only means trouble… In a good way of course!
Music Junkie Press: If I could peak into your Ipod, what artist or song might I be most surprised at finding in there?
Laura: Miley Cyrus.
Music Junkie Press:With Halloween coming up, what is your favorite childhood costume you wore?
Laura: Ernie from Sesame Street. Wore it two years in a row.
Music Junkie Press:Lastly, what would you like to share with our audience and your fans?
Laura:We have a new online store, with a lot of new items added for the fall/winter that can be purchased world wide in our website www.huntervalentine.com Also our single Burn With It is available on iTunes. And of course! Come check out our dates on the Lady Killer Tour with Sick Of Sarah!
Music Junkie Press:We really appreciate your time and look forward to catching you out on the road. We encourage everyone to pick up Burn With It and visit your social media sites! Thank you.

One of the highlights of our summer was watching the Make or Break The Linda Perry Project on Vh1. Whether you are a big fan of Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes), a musician, involved in the music industry, or simply tuned in to the show because it looked interesting, it was one of the best shows from this summer to watch. Linda not only took the viewer into her studios, but she took us on the musical journey of all the artists. It was great to listen to her profound advice make such an impact on each and every one. Sometimes, you might have watched and wondered what she was really thinking… but then as time passed, each and every action was for the right reason. Linda not only helped the musicians with their music but she was also a source of self introspection, reflection, self awareness and healing, all the while giving the tools to each musician to grow and blossom into something magical.
The Linda Perry Project Winner Candice Martello who writes and records as Hemming has just released her first video for her song, Hard on Myself. The song is currently available on the Linda Perry Project Season One EP oniTunes. It begins with a country twangy vibe and then her compelling vocals set in. She really is spectacular and the country feel is like a triumph of emotions at a Western high noon shoot out. Very creative and quite unique style, definitely a fave of mine. Check it out here:
Candice initially joined the show mid-season as one half of Philadelphia based punk band Omar with drummer Nick Fanelli, but caught Perry’s attention for her solo work. Candice remained on the show developing her solo work which lead to a recording contract with Perry’s Custard Records. “This is one of my most proudest moments. When making any record a producer has a list of things you hope a artist brings to the studio, “ says Perry. “Songs that are strong even without the bells and whistles. They are just good all on their own. Raw honest emotion, the kind of emotion that this industry was once built on. A voice you can believe. Creativity, talent and musicianship, and A Star. When they walk into the room they are a star. When they sing each line you feel it believe it want to embrace it curl up next to it and hold on each breath til the end of time, because they are a Star you want to follow. Hemming is all of it! I know she will prove to be much more.”
Hemming will be releasing her first full length album on Custard Records in the Spring of 2015 and is currently on tour with Rachel Yamagata. “This album has been years in the making for me.” says Martello,“Linda knew how much these songs meant to me and really brought them to life. I’m very proud of what we have created together and can’t wait for the world to hear it.” Check out the tour dates and see if she will be making a stop near you:

It was wonderful to watch them grown throughout the show and to hear their new song, Burn With It. Don’t mistake them for a new band, they have been pounding the pavement for 10 years and have a very dedicated fanbase. Once you take a listen, you will immediately fall in love with their music. I wish I had only heard of them sooner. This is one hard working band and when you see them perform, they bring out such a raw electric energy that will heighten all your senses
Hunter Valentine are setting out on their LadyKiller Tour and we had the chance to do a Q &A with drummer Laura Petracca. We are pleased to bring it to you here:

If you have been like us, your Wednesdays were the highlight of the week to watch Make or Break The Linda Perry Project on Vh1. Whether you are a big fan of Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes), a musician, involved in the music industry, or simply tuned in to the show because it looked interesting, it was one of the best shows from this summer to watch. Linda not only helped the musicians with their music but she was also a source of self introspection, reflection, self awareness and healing, all the while giving the tools to each musician to grow and blossom into something magical.
Now that the season is over, Linda did offer two of the final musicians (Candice Martello and Anjuli Stars) but also to work with Aimee Bessada. In the end, all the musicians delivered amazing performances on the last night. You can check out the new EP which features six of the artists from the show.
The EP starts off with Candice Martello and her song, Hard On Myself. It begins with a country twangy vibe and then her compelling vocals set in. She really is spectacular and the country feel is like a triumph of emotions at a Western high noon shoot out. Very creative and quite unique style, definitely a fave of mine.
Next up is the next artist to receive a record deal, Anjuli Stars and her song, Open the Door. She is a very talented rapper and she also has a beautiful singing voice that I hope to hear more of on her album. She is quite an empowering woman and her power shines through.
Aimee Bessada performs her song, Stills and this is my favorite track off the EP. Aimee brings out a raw emotion that truly is spine tingling. I literally got shivers the first time I heard her sing it. The song has a very Radiohead Creep vibe, not in any way imitating, since Aimee really has her own unique style. It just takes me back to that slow intro and intense build up that I love as the emotions are catapulted through the song. I am really looking forward to hearing more from Aimee and watch her as her musical career takes off.
Gabriel Mayers performs Too Close to the Sun and what an amazing transformation this young man went through, from singing covers to writing and performing his own songs. Gabriel has a great voice and if you have watched his covers before, you would agree with the fact that he is amazingly talented. I think he will continue to amaze us as he continues to grow into his own and write songs that capture his emotions.
Burn With It by Hunter Valentine was a nice surprise and is another one of my favorites. To watch this band go through the ups and downs of losing a band member, changing their sound and literally reforming their band, and the struggles of two member band. Then to witness these two create such a great song as Burn With It, gives you the reassurance that they are doing exactly what they are supposed to. This band is definitely going to continue to grab everyone’s attention. Kiyomi’s vocals bring this dark mysterious vibe that is absolutely mesmerizing. The tones and sultriness in her voice are captivating and she reminds me of a young Chrissy Hinde. This is the one band that I really look forward to seeing perform live since they bring out an infectious energy that I crave.
The last song It’s Coming Up by Vanjess. The song does show that the two girls have wonderful vocals and has an upbeat soulful pop style. When you really listen to the vocals, you get glimpses of their range which will leave you interested in checking out their music further and see if the emotions breakthrough.
All in all, the songs are quite varied styles which leaves you with an appreciation for the art of music. I hope you get a chance and pick it up and listen to all the songs. Also, check out all the episodes of Make Or Break so you can really appreciate the journeys that brought each musician to the song they performed. It will make them even more special when you listen. For me, music has been there for me through my ups and downs, triumphs and tribulations, helped me, healed me, inspired me and to know music is to know life. Maybe one of these songs will make that connection for you.
Music touches us emotionally, where words alone can’t – Johnny Depp
Music is the wine that fills the cup of silence – Robert Fripp
Music is an outburst of the soul – Frederick Delius
Music is a second language to my heart – Mara Arps
Now what would really make me happy is to see a Linda Perry Project Tour with the musicians! Make sure to pick up the EP, which is available on iTunes and Amazon. Also check out our article on the new single by Linda Perry’s alter-ego BluStone.
This week we get to see the finale of Make or Break: The Linda Perry Project on VH1 and we get to see which artist was selected by Linda Perry to make an album. Linda’s alter ego the hip and 70’s diva, Blue Stone appeared in a funny video titled Amercan’t Idol, check out the video here:
