hemming

Hemming (aka Candice Martello) was first introduced to the world through VH1’s Make or Break : The Linda Perry Project as one half of the Philadelphia punk duo Omar. Make or Break was developed by superstar producer and songwriter Linda Perry as the antithesis to reality music shows.  Martello joined the show as part of a band, but it was her solo work and a song called “Vitamins” that caught Perry’s attention and started Martello on the journey of finding and developing the voice of Hemming. At the conclusion of the show Martello was presented with the opportunity to make a record with Perry that will be coming out on Perry’s label (Custard Records) this Spring.

Hemming’s unique songwriting stamp is her ability to beautifully personify inanimate objects. The idea for “Vitamins” came to her while doing the regular morning routine of taking her daily vitamin. The song is about relying on something outside of yourself, whether that be material goods, substances or another person, to be happy and fulfilled. The song was recorded three different ways before getting it right. The initial attempt included very experimental  orchestrations, but the experimentation diminished the songs emotion. As an acoustic track the sound didn’t quite capture the beauty of the lyrics, and the final product was a combination of the two,  a simple and subtle arrangement that allows the strength of the lyrics and the uniqueness of Hemming’s voice to shine. Check out the song here and download it on iTunes here:

Hemming is in currently in the middle of a twenty-seven date tour with Rachael Yamagata. The list of remaining dates are below:

11.05 | Nashville, TN | 3rd & Lindsley
11.07 | Charlotte, NC | Visulite Theatre
11.08 | Carrboro, NC | Cat’s Cradle Back Room
11.10 | Annapolis, MD | Rams Head On Stage
11.15 | Philadelphia, PA | Union Transfer
11.17 | New York, NY | Bowery Ballroom

In case you missed it, check out the video for her song, Hard on Myself. The song is currently available on the Linda Perry Project Season One EP oniTunes. It begins with a country twangy vibe and then her compelling vocals set in. She really is spectacular and the country feel is like a triumph of emotions at a Western high noon shoot out. Very creative and quite unique style, definitely a fave of mine. Check it out here:

Make sure to pick up the EP, which is  available on iTunes and Amazon. Stay tuned for her new album set to release in Spring 2015.  Also check out our article on the single by Linda Perry’s alter-ego BluStone.

ghost season

Ghost Season from Athens, Greece definitely caught my attention with their new EP, Ghosts Like Her. The five song EP delivers a true taste of the talents of this band. They can be described as a blend of metal, progressive and hard rock.

Their EP starts right off with the fierce track, Alive and that is exactly how you feel when you are smacked in the face with those heavy guitars and a beat that just has you headbanging throughout. Those drums! I love the intensity and the dueling guitars just kick ass and we can’t forget to mention that epic guitar solo. The melodic vocals have a great 80’s rock vibe without overdoing it. They at times remind me of a lovechild of Stone Temple Pilots, Queensryche and Bullet For My Valentine yet in no way imitate. These guys have created their own unique sound that will soon have everyone taking notice of them and come to love Ghost Season.

Ghosts Like Her once again delivers those guitars that just grab you. This is a bit heavier of a track and with the addition of the dueling vocals take on a heavier stand at times quite like the modern metalcore of today but yet maintaining a melodic tone instead of unintelligible screams. I really like it and the precision drumming grabs your attention. The guitars are just sweet in this track and leave you swirling as the powerful vocals draw you right back in.

The Bleed may start off as aslower song but has a tremendous amount of depth to it. It is like a metal ballad since it carries so much more weight than the traditional slow rock ballad. The vocals carry such emotion and you can feel the passion as the guitars once again take you away. It has emotionally driven lyrics and is a solid stand out track on this EP.

Father Time delivers a superb groovy bass line at the intro and here is where the progressive metal/rock take over. It is intense, from the drums, the guitars, the bass, to the vocals. All around a ferocious song with melodic vocals. This song brings out an alternative edge to it that displays the versatile songwriting of this band. This is no cookie cutter band, they can deliver songs that shine on their individual merit.

The EP ends with my favorite track, Need and it not only has emotionally driven lyrics but dramatic vocals that carry such conviction with each lyric. It brings out a clean hard rock sound that can find itself catching the attention of a variety of genres. Truly great work and I look forward to what is next for them. Check out the song here:

centerlink2

Last year we introduced you to what soon became one of our family’s favorite band, Centerlink. A couple days don’t ever go by, where we are not cranking out Distant Voices, Hopes and Dreams or other songs from their CD, All it Takes. This is one metal band that has blown us away and with their latest release of their 3 song EP, Strength In Numbers, they have done it again. The EP brings out their sound which is reminiscent of early Metallica, Megadeth and even a side of Sex Pistols with their last song, Stronger Than Hate. They in no way imitate, instead they are blazing their own trail with their now familiar signature Centerlink sound. If you have been craving more straight up metal that is hard and heavy with fierce guitars, pounding drums and powerful melt your face vocals, then get ready to feel satisfied with Centerlink!

centerlink

The new EP is available for download on their Bandcamp page here: https://centerlink.bandcamp.com/album/strength-in-numbers. We picked up our copy and I hope you download yours! If you like your rock hard and heavy and your Metal in your face, this is the band for you! After listening to them, you will have a hard time believing that the great music comes from just three guys…. A Power Metal Trio that can rival many metal bands today, surprisingly these guys come from Boston, Massachusetts. I wasn’t expecting that either.  They have a sound of their own but you can feel their influences of anything from Metallica, Rob Zombie, Megadeth,  Anthrax, and so much more!  I know you may be thinking I am building them up, but seriously they deliver the goods!

Check out their video for their song, “Distant Voices”. This is the song that I first heard of theirs and believe me, it just keeps getting better and better.

Here is some information from our previous post about Centerlink back in 2013

Centerlink is Parky on guitars and vocals, Billy K on bass and Jon on drums. We contacted them immediately to find out more about them and how they started. Parky told us, “Centerlink first started back in late 2005. Jon and I  have been friends since we were both 14 years old and in 2005 with the passing of Jon’s mom Jon and I got together. I was recording music on a pc using software and Jon had an electronic drum set so he wanted me to show him how to record. So next thing you know we were collaborating. Jon then got in contact with an old friend of his that played bass in a band they were we in. So entered Billy, which he had some songs already recorded and we just started moving from there.”

This band is from Boston where as Parky told us, “There is not a good metal scene from where we are from. We are from south of Boston and there is no real metal scene there. If you want to play metal music or catch a metal show you are headed out towards the Worcester are along with southern New Hampshire, Maine and Northern Connecticut”

They currently have a CD titled, “All it Takes” that is going to be a must have for all of you. This one is going to be on replay for quite a while, believe me, I LOVE IT! Hard and Heavy with energy and clean driven sound. You can get their CD on Bandcamp as well as their shirts.

I asked Parky about what they are currently working on and he told us, “We are currently working on doing our next video for the song Withered and we are also working on new material for a new album. We are also friends with Eddie Halford aka Bone Digger Halford and could possibly be working with him in the future. He is Rob Halford’s cousin.”   That will be no surprise of them getting the attention of Eddie, they really are incredible and a band you will be hearing a lot more of. As far as airplay, they are currently played (for the moment) on independent internet radio such as  metalnation.com and indie365radio.com. It will not be long before we hear them on Octane, Sixx Sense and radio stations everywhere.

Lastly, I asked Parky about what bands would they be interested in touring with and they said, Korn or Anthrax. I think that would be quite a show and we top it off with Device!. We need to get these guys out on the road so let’s all make some calls and make this happen.

Make sure to head over and buy their CD, and you can also listen to more of them on Reverbnation. This is one band, you cannot pass up listening to.  In our house, our family is into all styles of rock and roll and metal and tonight we all came together and head banged to Centerlink, even 6 year old Brandon had his fists in the air! Now that has not happened in a very, very long time!

One of the highlights of our summer was watching the Make or Break The Linda Perry Project on Vh1. Whether you are a big fan of Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes), a musician, involved in the music industry, or simply tuned in to the show because it looked interesting, it was one of the best shows from this summer to watch. Linda not only took the viewer into her studios, but she took us on the musical journey of all the artists. It was great to listen to her profound advice make such an impact on each and every one. Sometimes, you might have watched and wondered what she was really thinking… but then as time passed, each and every action was for the right reason. Linda not only helped the musicians with their music but she was also a source of self introspection, reflection, self awareness and healing, all the while giving the tools to each musician to grow and blossom into something magical.

The Linda Perry Project Winner Candice Martello who writes and records as Hemming has just released her first video for her song, Hard on Myself.

Candice initially joined the show mid-season as one half of Philadelphia based punk band Omar with drummer Nick Fanelli, but caught Perry’s attention for her solo work.  Candice remained on the show developing her solo work which lead to a recording contract with Perry’s Custard Records. “This is one of my most proudest moments. When making any record a producer has a list of things you hope a artist brings to the studio, “ says Perry.  “Songs that are strong even without the bells and whistles. They are just good all on their own. Raw honest emotion, the kind of emotion that this industry was once built on. A voice you can believe. Creativity, talent and musicianship, and A Star.  When they walk into the room they are a star. When they sing each line you feel it believe it want to embrace it curl up next to it and hold on each breath til the end of time, because they are a Star you want to follow. Hemming is all of it!  I know she will prove to be much more.”

Hemming will be releasing her first full length album on Custard Records in the Spring of 2015 and  is currently on tour with Rachel Yamagata. “This album has been years in the making for me.” says Martello,  “Linda knew how much these songs meant to me and really brought them to life. Today The Funeral Portrait have released their EP For The Dearly Departed  through Revival Records and it is quite a a musical gem. It has a very fresh new sound that blends elements of metal, rock and roll, power pop, and theatrical rock. It makes me think of what Queen would be like if they were a band debuting in today’s blended genre music scene. The intensity of each song captures such emotion and then takes you an melodic theatrical ride amid fierce guitars, powerful vocals, striking drums, dramatic synth and so much more. The band describes the EP as,

For the Dearly Departed is a short concept album revolving around a single character who endures the five stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance, The first song is the event that triggers the process, and the following songs represent each of the five stages. I’m not going to tell anyone how to listen to our music, but it helps to keep this concept in mind to understand the product as a whole. As far as new sounds or ideas to listen for, we enjoyed writing more ‘call and response’ vocal parts to utilize the dual vocalist dynamic. We also worked very hard to organize the momentum of each song and the EP as a whole so that the songs accurately represented the emotions that coincide with the five stages of grief.

What an incredible concept and they truly did an amazing job on this explosive EP. It leaves me satisfied yet wanting so much more new music and hopefully their own tour very soon. For The Dearly Departed tops my list for Best EPs of 2014! Make sure to pick up the EP on iTunes here. These guys have a bright future ahead and they are currently finishing up the  “Chaos Is A Ladder Tour” with Alesana, Megosh, and The Things They Carried.  Check the dates below and make sure you get yourself to a show.

Buckcherry have just released their new video for their song, Say Fuck It which is off their recently released EP, which is titled…. FUCK.  You may be wondering about the title but there is much more to the four letter word title. This is a tribute to the word ‘fuck’… Over the years, we’ve been told so many times to get away from the honesty that makes this band special. It’s a part of who I am. It’s not about the profanity itself; it’s about using it cleverly.” – Josh Todd posted on their Facebook page.

 Check out the video here:

This is probably the best cover of Icona Pop’s song, I Love It, done perfectly in Buckcherry fashion!! I love it!! It is true Buckcherry with the signature vocals of Josh, swirling guitars, high energy and rock attitude. I can’t wait for the new album!

We are excited to see that Buckcherry are returning to this year’s Monster Energy Aftershock in Sacramento on September 14th, they will be performing on Sunday at 3:30 on the Monster Stage South. They will also be performing on this year’s lineup for Rockstar Uproar Festival. More details on Uproar Festival here. We just caught them earlier this year when they came to the Heritage Theater in Campbell, CA. You can check out our full coverage of their Campbell, California show here.

If you have been like us, your Wednesdays were the highlight of the week to watch Make or Break The Linda Perry Project on Vh1. It was great to watch her profound advice make such an impact on each and every one.

Now that the season is over, Linda did offer two of the final musicians (Candice Martello and Anjuli Stars) but also to work with Aimee Bessada. In the end, all the musicians delivered amazing performances on the last night. You can check out the new EP which features six of the artists from the show.

The EP starts off with Candice Martello and her song, Hard On Myself. It begins with a country twangy vibe and then her compelling vocals set in. She really is spectacular and the country feel is like a triumph of emotions at a Western high noon shoot out. Very creative and quite unique style, definitely a fave of mine.

Next up is the next artist to receive a record deal, Anjuli Stars and her song, Open the Door. She is a very talented rapper and she also has a beautiful singing voice that I hope to hear more of on her album. She is quite an empowering woman and her power shines through.

Aimee Bessada performs her song, Stills and this is my favorite track off the EP. Aimee brings out a raw emotion that truly is spine tingling. I literally got shivers the first time I heard her sing it. The song has a very Radiohead Creep vibe, not in any way imitating, since Aimee really  has her own unique style. It just takes me back to that slow intro and intense build up that I love as the emotions are catapulted through the song.  I am really looking forward to hearing more from Aimee and watch her as her musical career takes off.

Gabriel Mayers performs Too Close to the Sun and what an amazing transformation this young man went through, from singing covers to writing and performing his own songs. Gabriel has a great voice and if you have watched his covers before, you would agree with the fact that he is amazingly talented. I think he will continue to amaze us as he continues to grow into his own and write songs that capture his emotions.

Burn With It by Hunter Valentine was a nice surprise and is another one of my favorites. To watch this band go through the ups and downs of losing a band member, changing their sound and literally reforming their band, and the struggles of two member band. Then to witness these two create such a great song as Burn With It, gives you the reassurance that they are doing exactly what they are supposed to. This band is definitely going to continue to grab everyone’s attention. Kiyomi’s vocals bring this dark mysterious vibe that is absolutely mesmerizing. The tones and sultriness in her voice are captivating and she reminds me of a young Chrissy Hinde. This is the one band that I really look forward to seeing perform live since they bring out an infectious energy that I crave.

The last song It’s Coming Up by Vanjess. The song does show that the two girls have wonderful vocals and has an upbeat soulful pop style. When you really listen to the vocals, you get glimpses of their range which will leave you interested in checking out their music further and see if the emotions breakthrough.

All in all, the songs are quite varied styles which leaves you with an appreciation for the art of music. I hope you get a chance and pick it up and listen to all the songs. Also, check out all the episodes of Make Or Break so you can really appreciate the journeys that brought each musician to the song they performed. It will make them even more special when you listen. For me, music has been there for me through my ups and downs, triumphs and tribulations, helped me, healed me, inspired me and to know music is to know life. Maybe one of these songs will make that connection for you.

Music touches us emotionally, where words alone can’t – Johnny Depp

Music is the wine that fills the cup of silence – Robert Fripp

Music is an outburst of the soul – Frederick Delius

Music is a second language to my heart – Mara Arps

Now what would really make me happy is to see a Linda Perry Project Tour with the musicians! Make sure to pick up the EP, which is  available on iTunes and Amazon. Also check out our article on the new single by Linda Perry’s alter-ego BluStone.

Jake Furia

The multi genre performer, Jake Furia definitely has a passion for music. I love that this young talented musician is so versatile with his music and it truly shows with  his well crafted songs on his new EP, The Acoustic EP.  The EP, which was recorded at Get Open Studios in Long Island and engineered by Michael Coppola, it can be purchased on iTunes here: http://bit.ly/1elu3gd.

‘The Acoustic EP’ for me is a starting point. It’s music in a really raw and bare-bones format, and I wanted to start with it for that reason. In my career, I want to get to experience music in as many ways as I can. Everyone who loves art has something in  specific to them that they love about it. I think thats beautiful and I want to discover all’ve those things.” explains Furia.

Jake has announced several August tour dates for New York with his band The Be Yourselves. Check out the dates below:

  • August 05                        Rockville Centre, NY          Vibe Lounge
  • August 09                        Patchogue, NY                      ArtSpace
  • August 15                        Holbrook, NY                        House Show
  • August 23                        Amityville, NY                      Revolution
  • August 29                        Islip, NY                                 East Islip Lanes

We had the opportunity to talk with Jake and are pleased to repost that interview for you here:

Music Junkie Press: The Acoustic EP is quite impressive, for a stripped down version, you bring to life such emotion! We love it!  One of my favorites on it is the track Crazy Woman, can you tell us how that song came about?

Oh thank you guys so much, that makes me really happy to hear you say that haha.  Well! Crazy Woman was the first real song I’d ever written when I was about 14 years old. When I was younger and had just started really liking music, I had a huge love for Classic Rock. The opening riff for the song is actually influenced by the opening of Pete Townsend’s (The Who) solo from the song “My Generation”. After I got that riff the chorus just got in my head. There wasn’t any girl or something that sparked that idea haha. However, when I was about 19 or 20, I decided to pick the song back up and finish it based on an Ex-Girlfriend.

Music Junkie Press:  How old were you when you first started to play and can you remember what was the first song you played in it’s entirety?

Well when I was 10, my Dad gave me his old Guild Acoustic guitar as a Christmas Present that year. Then when I was 14 my Mom decided to get me guitar lessons for THAT Christmas. And boom, it shaped my whole life afterwards. Oh yes, haha the first song that I got down when I started playing was, “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd. “Take It Easy” by The Eagles was right in there too but i don’t remember where.

Music Junkie Press: Your songs have heartfelt emotion coming through, do you have a particular song writing process and is as emotion for you when you record?

Again, thank you so much, you don’t know how much it means to me that you guys say so. I absolutely have a writing process. Last year (2013) when I decided to take the route of being a solo artist, I had just been coming out of a Heavy Metal band named Deadly Blessed. The biggest thing I changed when I made that switch (after the band had disbanded), was the way that I wrote. Up until last year, when I wrote I remember that I’d always just try to be like really, “Rock ‘N Roll Bro”. I wrote about Whiskey and Leather and Hate and and all of that lol. At the time in life when I became a solo artist however, I’d also just undergone what I can only call a Spiritual Enlightenment. All of the sudden I just opened up, I started writing about love and the beauty of inspiration and creativity. I let the music flow as opposed to trying to force it out and be a cool guy.

Music Junkie Press: Here at Music Junkie Press, we are very strong believers how music can help, heal, inspire and become the soundtrack of our ups and downs of our lives, can you share a particular time when music helped you the most?

Ah yeah, I really do have just one time in particular when I had that happen but it was definitely important to me. At one time in life (when I was 18) I was in a situation where I  felt trapped and cut off from going for my dreams. I had a girlfriend that I didn’t really love and I was really afraid that I’d get stuck with her. At the same time I’d started listening to Dream Theater. I had their album “Black Clouds And Silver Linings” which had track on it called “Wither”. The song means a lot to me. It’s about breaking down the stresses of creativity and simply letting the music take you. For me, I remember telling myself and my soul that I promised, that if I got to walk away from that situation that I would give my whole self to my music and nothing else.

Music Junkie Press: What are you currently working on?

ALBUM. Lol, I’m really so stoked right now. Aside from playing some fun summer shows here at home (Long Island), (dates poster attached if you’d like to see), I’m really excited to say that I’ll be working on my first Full a Length LP with my backing band, “The Be-Yourselves”. The album is going to consist of a whole bunch of styles that I love from Pop-Punk to Reggae to Hardcore and EDM. I’m really feeling fortunate that I’m getting the opportunity to create it.

Music Junkie Press: What are your plans for the summer, any shows in the works?

Yessir! Right now I’m actually in the middle of a run of shows that stretch across Long Island and into Manhattan and Pennsylvania. I have a bunch of shows with my backing band, “The Be-Yourselves”, a handful of guest appearances with a Hip Hop artist I work with named Timbo, a Solo Acoustic show here and there, and even a DJ slot as my DJ alias, “Enfuria”. I’m really happy to say that because of how diverse our music scene is here on Long Island, that I’ll be playing with bands of a bunch of different genres. The shows are across a few different scenes, ranging from Punk to Reggae to Hip/Hop and I’m sure I’ll see a Hardcore show before the season is done (most of my homies play in Death Metal and Hardcore bands and I love that stuff).

Music Junkie Press: When you are not busy writing or performing, what do you like to do in your “off time”?

Well whenever I’m not at my job with my Dad or working on my career, I have a really sweet girlfriend named Sandra. I always love doing stuff with her, she’s awesome. 🙂 Otherwise, I go to concerts, music festivals, raves etc. I stay pretty much just in with the music, you know.

Music Junkie Press: If you could collaborate with anyone or band, who might that be?

I actually literally just had this aspiration hit me yesterday. My number one artist that I would really love to collaborate with is the DJ Bassnectar. Whether it be as a featured musician or if we could actually make a track together. He’s a big inspiration to me. His vibe is amazing and I would really be honored. I also really want to make track with my favorite band The Dirty Heads.

Music Junkie Press: “Breathe” is another track that is amazing and your vocals create such a vulnerability yet very powerful. Can you tell me the inspiration behind that song?

Thanks so very much, I’m really happy you think so. That song is actually super important to me because it was the thing that sparked the direction I took with my career. I wrote that song back in like 2011 when I had randomly gotten the idea for the opening riff. When I start writing lyrics for it I ended up writing a whole story. What it’s about is a guy who’s girlfriend has passed but he can really still feel her in every area of his life. At the end of the story though, he finds peace in realizing that he’d been dead all along and they could be together anyway. I know it’s a little morbid sounding but for me in a way I don’t acknowledge death. I think that energy passes around to different vessels and lives on. If you can embrace the concept of eternity it makes life very calm.

Music Junkie Press: What is  your Go To song that you can play and instantly gets you into that feel good mood?

Right now it’s really any song that has the super slowed down ambient alternative rock vibe. Like the band Brand New, I love that stuff. Like right now I started covering the Grateful Dead’s, Friend Of The Devil I’m doing it in a way that’s slower and gets you to listen to those chords a little more. I really do love a lot of things though, Punk music is my thing right now, I started listening to The Wonder Years and Bayside and Neck Deep and Four Year Strong and fell in love.

Music Junkie Press: Lastly, is there something you would like to share with our audience?

Yeah, I mean the most exciting thing that’s going on right now is that I’m going to start recording my first LP at the end of the summer! I’m stoked because this one is going to feature my Full Backing Band, “The Be-Yourselves”. It’s called, “Where The Ends Fall Off” and what it’s going to be is kind of an Alt. Rock album with really direct instances of Pop Punk, Reggae, Hardcore and just a lil’ Electro.

I keep up to date pretty much on all of my medias so if you’re ever interested on the progress or anything feel free to check it out. 🙂 I put all of my links below! Thanks so much for taking the time to talk to me.

New York City based rockers, Tempt who made their debut earlier this year at Rocklahoma are set to release their new EP, Under My Skin on iTunes, Amazon and a physical CD. The EP was previously only available as a limited edition collectors item released for the band’s appearance at Rocklahoma where the pressing sold out. They will celebrate the official release on July 29th as they will be performing as support for one of my favorites, Tom Keifer at BB Kings in New York City. That is one show I wish I could make it out to!

Zach Allen, the19 year old lead singer of the group explained “we’re starting to get some radio play of other cuts beyond the single and fans want the EP.”  Harrison Marcello, guitarist added, “It’s great to start to hear guitar solos and up beat rock on the radio again!”  The band also stressed that the EP will not be available to streaming services. “We believe that our fans want to hold an album, see the credits and have more of an experience than a streaming service provides. We also believe that our fans want to support us and our music and they understand that streaming does not do that.”

I completely agree that holding a CD or downloading an entire EP is so much more important than streaming. In this day and age, buying a band’s EP or merch is the one sure way that you can truly show your support and we strongly encourage it!  We can’t wait to pick our copy up!

The band chose this show to coincide with the official release date because of their admiration of Tom Keifer. “We had the chance to see Tom perform at Rocklahoma and he is just incredible.” “Of Course we are huge fans and count Tom among our influences so being able to play with him is incredible”.

We will bring you our review of Under My Skin soon and can’t wait to catch Tempt out on a tour soon. We had the chance to interview Tempt earlier this year before they headed out to Rocklahoma. In case you missed it, you can check it out here:  Interview with Tempt.

The New York City based Tempt is Zach Allen (vocals), Harrison Marcello (guitars, keyboards, vocals), Zak Gross (bass, vocals), and Jimmi Kane (drums). Together these four are breathing the life back in to rock and roll with their big sound. Their music is highly guitar driven, up-tempo rock that will have you with your fist in the air and ready to party.

Make sure to visit their social media sites and stay up to date on their latest news. You will be hearing a lot from this young promising band as they bring life back to straight up rock n roll!
