Great news to share! Ani DiFranco is set to release a new album, Allergic To Water on October 14th through her own label, Righteous Babe Records. The album was tracked by herself at her New Orleans home, often while her family slept and creates a hushed vibe to the album. Ani explained more about the album during a statement on her site:

Mostly I worked alone in headphones, in the wee hours, while my family slept. It was empowering but terrifying to have the buck stop with me again in terms of the mixes. The recordings are documents of my current touring band (recorded by Mike in our old victorian house in the Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans and also by Andy Taub at a nearby church in the Treme) just laying down the songs.

“Many also feature a couple of very choice special guests. My killer band these days consists of bassist and composer Todd Sickafoose, who not only brings an always wonderful and unexpected counterpoint to my guitar with his bass playing, but is also my secret weapon in terms of production- overdubbing atmospherics and embellishments that add depth and color to the stories I tell.

“My drummer is Terence Higgins, a New Orleans native, who brings that deeply funky pocket that makes me smile so wide, yet all-the-while listening through to the whole picture and really making music with his instrument, not just rhythms. Though most of Terence’s musical incarnations have him playing drum kit, this record really features his hand-percussion prowess- like the congas on “see see see see”, the Mardi Gras Indian style tambourine on “genie” – he nailed it every time.”

We are so excited for the album and can’t wait for it. You can check out the first song Woe Be Gone here:

Once again, Ani treats us with her sweet beautiful music and you can’t help but fall in love with this amazingly talented singer/songwriter/poet. We had the opportunity to catch her performance earlier this year in Napa and it was one of the most magical nights. You can read all about it here:  Ani DiFranco mesmerizes Napa.  Check out a slideshow of photos from that night by our Rockin Ryan:

We will continue to keep you updated and make sure to also visit the social media sites for more news. I hope you take the time out of your busy schedule and put on some Ani DiFranco, one thing is for sure, you will feel alive and vibrant as you soak in her energy and feel her music enter your soul. I would encourage you to head over to www.righteousbabe.com and pick up some music today. Also, Not A Pretty Girl is available as a newly re-mastered Vinyl and is a MUST HAVE or make sure you have her latest of her 20 albums, ¿Which Side are You On?,

The Deadlies

We had listed SmashMouth as one of our featured bands of the Day for Bottle Rock last month and they were awesome last Saturday. We were running around like crazy but we were glad we could make it out to the Miner Stage to catch a few of their songs from their set. It was packed from front to back, side to side. They were truly there to give the fans what they wanted; an absolutely fun time filled with their favorite songs.

This band does not need any introduction as almost all of us at one time or another cranked up “All Star” and sang out loud at the top of our lungs. I have always had a love affair with SmashMouth since they bring out the fun side in me and capture the perfect essence of summer! You can’t help but listen to their music loud and dance along as their music has always been the life of the party!  “When we play itʼs a nonstop party,” Steve Harwell, lead singer says. That is so true and I hope you all come out to enjoy SmashMouth and their non stop party at this year’s Bottle Rock Napa Festival. Check out a few of Rockin Ryan’s photos from their set here:

SmashMouth started back in 1994 in San Jose and this year is the 20 year Anniversary for them.  They have hits that were and still are everyone’s favorites such as Walkinʼ on the Sun and All Star,Then the Morning Comes, Canʼt Get Enough Of You Baby, and a cover of The Monkees classic Iʼm a Believer. You can’t forget how great it was to hear their Monkees cover  on the Shrek soundtrack (#4, Billboard Adult Top 40). Collectively, the band Smash Mouth has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide and there is no letting up in sight for these musicians as they continue to keep the party alive. Here is our quick band feature:

Band Members:

  • Steve Harwell- Lead Singer
  • Paul DeLisle- Bass
  • Sean Hurwitz- Guitar
  • Michael Klooster-Keys
  • Jason Sutter  – Drums

If you missed their performance at this year’s Bottle Rock you can also catch them out on tour this summer with Uncle Kracker, Sugar Ray and Blues Travelers. Also, they will be performing on June 13th at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. That will definitely be one fun beach party night and I hope you make it out there!

The Deadlies were one of our Bottle Rock Napa Featured Bands and we were able to catch their set this past Saturday. One thing is for sure, they truly brought the fun to the festival. Their stage was set up like a surf party complete with beach go-go dancers. The City Winery Local Stage was one of the most happenin spots when The Deadlies took to the stage. This is a local band with a big sound!

As we told you before in our preshow coverage, you may have already seen or heard them play but we were not familiar with them. The Deadlies can be described as a California surf punk/rock band with a little Honky Tonk and Country thrown in.  One thing is for sure, when you listen to The Deadlies, you can’t help but move around and have some fun! They are “paying homage to the Ventures Dick Dale and the Chantays as well as the California Honky-tonk sound of Buck Owens and Dwight Yoakam while keeping an under lying presence of the California surf punk scene that brought us the Dickies, Agent Orange and Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs.”

The Deadlies are the “Cave Band” on “Creepy KOFY Movietime”, the “house band” at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo and their music has been featured on Live 105, 107.7FM the Bone (San Francisco), 99.3FM KVYN (Napa) and 810AM KGO (San Francisco). Matisyahu

Today our Bottle Rock Napa Featured Artist is Matisyahu. Matisyahu brings a fresh new life to the music scene and has been inspiring people for the past decade with his reggae hip hop style and alternative music. His energy is infectious and when he sings you can’t help but feel lighter as your troubles lift away. Matisyahu has a very unique story of his upbringing and how he became to be known as “The hasidic reggae superstar”. His story, just like his music takes you into such depths with his songs and a journey. His music has evolved over the years, just as his spirituality. Listening to him, can create the perfect blissful mood.

Matisyahu currently has his new album, AKEDA which is set to release on June 4th. Akeda is said to be his most personal album and one which he had the most creative control over.  As Matisyahu says,  “Akeda is the kind of album an artist makes when there is no other creative choice but to turn oneself inside-‐out, to scrape the insides and reveal everything raw” . The album can be pre-ordered on Itunes here. We look forward to hearing some of his new songs at this year’s Bottle Rock Napa Festival.

CURE

Today our Bottle Rock Napa Featured Band is The Cure. Yes, it is Friday and I’m in Love and so I had to feature The Cure today. The Cure are a band that really needs no explanation, introduction or description; they are THE CURE!!!  We all know them and many, many, many of us love them. I have been a true diehard fan of The Cure since maybe 1980 when I first heard, Boy’s Don’t Cry. I was listening to a lot of the classic 70’s style rock since I had two older brothers and a lot of R&B and Disco since I also had three older sisters. With the introduction of The Cure into my world, it became My Music, music for my generation. My older sisters and brothers definitely did not get it nor did they like it. That is also what drew me even more to listening to The Cure, my rebellious nature at 13 or 14 was kicking into high gear and The Cure soon became another soundtrack to a period in my life.

Over the past thirty years, I still listen to them at least a couple times a week. I have cassettes stashed in drawers and several copies of each CD. I remember not finding my favorites so I would go out and buy it all over again. I needed my fix of the Cure and I needed to have it on my own CD or Vinyl so I could crank it up loud since for me, that is the only way for me to listen to them. So when I saw they were coming to perform at Bottle Rock Napa Festival this year, the little 13 year old in me belted out the loudest scream. What is even more remarkable is that The Cure have been consistently putting out great music for the past 30+ years and there is no slowing down for them. That signature voice of Robert Smith will grab your attention every time and you can’t resist it, It is addictive!

The Cure has been described as everything from Gothic Rock, Post-Punk, Alternative, and many more but as Robert Smith once said, “It’s so pitiful when ‘goth’ is still tagged onto the name The Cure. We’re not categorisable. I suppose we were post-punk when we came out, but in total it’s impossible […] I just play Cure music, whatever that is.” Yes, well said Robert and we can’t wait to hear more Cure music. Here is our quick band feature:

Band Members:

Robert Smith – lead vocals, guitar, six-string bass, keyboards

Simon Gallup – bass guitar, keyboards

Roger O’Donnell – keyboards

Jason Cooper – drums, percussion

Reeves Gabrels – guitar

James Otto

James Otto

Today our Bottle Rock Napa Featured Artist is James Otto. Today I wanted to feature country artist, James Otto. I love James’ vocals. As many of you know I don’t listen to country that often. I guess it can best be explained by the following meme:

James Otto

James has such an amazing voice, he can take you from flirty, seductive, spiritual, comforting, and fun just by the range of his tones. He currently has his third album out, Shake What God Gave Ya and it is a collection of songs that highlight his powerful vocals and brings to the forefront, his heart of soul. The album is a journey of exploration of country-soul and one of my favorites on it is Soldiers & Jesus. The emotionally stirring lyrics are captivating and will feed your soul.  In regards to his latest album James explains,  “As much as there’s all these different fractures of country music these days—you have pop country, rock country, traditional country, alt-country, and all these things in between—I don’t know why country-soul couldn’t exist right alongside it all.” Shake What God Gave Ya is such a blast, spanning the spectrum from rump-shaking motivationals to pure romance, that even if Otto were country music’s sole soul man, that’d be genre enough.

James really brings a life to country and you can feel the influence of rhythm and blues in several of his songs. He really creates such an energetic and positive environment through his songs.  I am very excited to catch James Otto perform since his music is full of depth and layers, yet it is always uplifting. These days, we all could use more uplifting songs and smiles in our lives and James is there to bring them to us with his gift of music.

Howie Day

Today our Bottle Rock Napa Featured Artist is Howie Day. Howie has one of the most phenomenal voices that truly speaks to you, whether he is there to cheer you up, inspire you, remind you of a special memory, or comfort you through hard times. There is something magical about his songs, they seem to be the perfect fit to whatever mood I am in. This morning I was rushing around dealing with several challenges and I was running around and I knew I needed to just take a bit of time to quiet down and slow down to reflect. Then, on the radio, came Howie Day’s Collide. First I was greeted with memories of a very special time when I first hear that song years ago. Then I realized the song gave me the perfect time to slow down and reflect and realize that I am doing exactly what I am supposed to be doing. Then of course, I had to hear more from Howie. One of the next songs I listened to was Brace Yourself which I think is one of his best songs. It has such a passion in the lyrics and depth in layers and tones that just draw you in.

I am hoping to catch him perform Life Size which is one of his latest songs that I have heard as a DEMO on his site. IT is spectacular and emotionally touching.  When you see Howie Day perform live, you will instantly feel the connection that he brings from his music to the audience. The atmosphere is filled with his heartfelt lyrics as they travel from listener to listener creating an energy that is inescapable. Howie will definitely be one of the biggest highlights at this year’s Bottle Rock Napa Festival. Howie has many other show dates throughout the Spring and Summer so make sure to visit his SHOWS page on his website so you don’t miss him.

Robert DeLong

Today our Bottle Rock Napa Featured Artist is Robert DeLong. Today I want to bring you something a little bit different than what I usually share with you. That is the great new music by Robert DeLong. Robert is a singer/songwriter that is truly a one man electronic band. When he performs live, he is a one-man band who uses MIDI interfaces, a full drum set, guitar, drum pads, keyboards, laptops and game controllers, looping his music live to fuse electronic dance beats with striking melodies and lyrics with emotional heart. What you are treated to is a eclectic and highly energetic performance that brings you anything from pop, dance, house, rock and roll and so much more.

I think Bottle Rock Napa has done such a great job at bringing in a variety of music styles and genres for everyone to enjoy. Robert played at SXSW and had everyone taking notice of his creative unique sound. He has been dubbed the  ‘2013 Artist To Watch’ by the likes of MTV, Billboard and VIBE and continues to have everyone’s attention. He released his album Just Movement and has completed a successful national tour. He also is set to perform at many summer festivals this year to include, Hangout, Bonnaroo, Summerfest, Free Press Festival and many more. Make sure to visit his tour page for more details. One thing is for sure, if Robert DeLong is performing you better believe it will be a colorful and lively crowd filled with infectious energy and Robert will be the highlight of the party.
