Monte Money: Nightmare Before Christmas and Carol of the Bells.

Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?

Michael Money: The Christmas tree, I love picking out a tree it’s awesome! Bringing it home and trying to shove it through the front door when it’s just too big. Ha ha!

What is the oddest gift you have ever received?

It’s not an odd gift exactly but an odd process. In high school, I had to go on a scavenger hunt around the neighborhood to find my present which turned out to be a guitar wrapped in a box in a tree outside of the house that I had to climb to get.

What is your favorite Holiday Food Item?

Favorite holiday food is an old Italian dessert called struffoli that is something my grandmother would make and is something I usually still make.

What is your favorite Holiday family tradition that you still do today?

A holiday tradition for me which was started 8 years ago with my family in New York was seeing Trans Siberian Orchestra and is now a tradition I carry out here in LA with my friends.

Do you have a favorite holiday movie or song?

Favorite holiday movie would be between Elf and Nightmare Before Christmas, both are movies I enjoy a lot and watch on Christmas day. Being my family is from New York, I love all the jokes and humor pertaining to the city in it and Nightmare Before Christmas, need I say more? It’s one of my all time favorites.

Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?

My memory is of the miniature artificial Christmas tree my parents would set up for me when I was a kid every year in my room. Nowadays, I set up that same tree with many of the same Disney Ornaments from back then on top of an old bass cabinet I used and line the whole thing in Christmas lights . And of course, add some Halloween flare to the whole set up.

What is the oddest gift you have ever received?

Well first of all, I am thankful for any gift I receive, so don’t this twisted, but I do remember my family was going through a rough patch, so my gifts were a bit odd this one year.  My big gift was a “vintage” pachinko machine. A what? Yeah I know, that’s what I said when I got it.. I didn’t ask for one, hell I didn’t even know they existed, so I had no idea what I was looking at when I unwrapped it.  A pachinko machine is a Korean pinball machine.  Anyway, at first I was a bit confused and thought I had unwrapped the wrong gift, but I was a understanding kid and before I knew it, me and my friends were having pachinko tournaments.

What is your favorite Holiday Food Item?

Mama Kweens’ Gumbo!

What is your favorite Holiday family tradition that you still do today?

My scavenger hunt.  I always pick someone every year and will wrap a box with a note inside…  That note has a clue to find the next gift with another note inside to find the next gift with another note and clue inside and so on and so forth until the person finds their actual gift.  This can be hours of fun, as it can go on for a while and it gives me great pleasure watching people wandering around trying to figure out my poorly written riddles.  I’ve sent people down the street, to other homes, inside of cars, up in trees..  Oh the joy of Christmas.

Do you have a favorite holiday movie or song?

My favorite movie would be that old stop-animation movie with the cold miser and heat miser.  Those two guys crack me up and their theme songs are hilarious! I think it’s called, “The Year Without a Santa Claus”, I love all those old stop-animation movies and my favorite song would be “Please Come Home For Christmas” the version by The Eagles.

Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?

My Mom is an awesome decorator.  Her decorations are the best I’ve ever seen.  Her stuff should be in magazines, it’s better than what you see in high-end department stores and she does it all with arthritic hands.  She is absolutely amazing!  She tops herself every year, which makes it hard to pick a favorite, but if I had to, it would be the little black tree she puts in my room when I visit.

What is the oddest gift you have ever received?

We had a mate from Canada stay with our family in NZ one Xmas. He put big presents under the tree for everyone, and we felt bad that he’d spent all his money doing that. Then we opened them and realized he’d done his shopping at the Dollar Store! Haha… Mine was like a plastic toy piano.

What is your favorite Holiday Food Item?

Xmas is in Summer in NZ, so you gotta fire up the Barbie! Wash it down with a few Steinlager Pures… Finish it off with Pavlova for dessert, which is Kiwi fav

What is your favorite Holiday family tradition that you still do today?

In our family, we try and get as many people in one spot as we can! It’s awesome because you keep having new people showing up all day.

Do you have a favorite holiday movie or song?

We love “Scrooged” with Bill Murray. That was on every year on Xmas Eve in NZ when we were kids.

Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?

When I was a kid one year I didn’t know what to get Mum, so I tried to make her a Xmas wreath. I couldn’t figure out how to make the chicken wire round, so the wreath is a square! But it actually came out ok, and she loved it. I’m pretty sure if you drove past the house today you’d see it hanging on the door!

What is the oddest gift you have ever received?

Christmas or in general? Haha I’ll answer both, for Christmas, I received a Backstreet Boys CD at like 12, and while I’m not knocking them, the Backstreet Boys have never been my type of music ever lol. Maybe when I was 7-8 when all the girls went nuts for them, but by 12, I was into the stuff I’m into now.

Oddest gift ever?? My 18th birthday, where my buddies decided to bake me a “shit” cake, they literally threw everything in the kitchen in there, stuck it in the oven, and “baked” me a cake lol. I took a bite and it was horrendous but I felt the love haha.

What is your favorite Holiday Food Item?

Well I’m Portuguese, my entire family is, so I’m totally looking forward to all the food my grandmothers gonna cook up! But totally can’t wait for that Portuguese –wait for it—TURKEY! In Montreal, Portuguese chicken is like food fashion, people  line-up everywhere they make it to get some chicken, but I’m waiting for my home cooked Turkey!!

What is your favorite Holiday family tradition that you still do today?

Ever since I was born, we’d go to my Grandmother’s house on Christmas Eve. The entire family is there (way bigger now than when I was 5-6), and it’s just a great time without any worries. We’d get gifts at midnight (since we wouldn’t see each other till the week after), and just continue the fun there. The tradition has changed, I now enjoy watching my younger cousins open their gifts! And all the grandchildren take a photo on this staircase at my grandmothers house. I’m the eldest grandchild, and the youngest is 2 and theres 8 other children in between, so that staircase is plenty full. Although, I’m trying to “retire” myself from this photo since I’m closer to having my own kids then being a grandchild lol.

Do you have a favorite holiday movie or song?

Oh of course! Jingle All The Way! The movie with Arnie! TURBOOOO MAN! Home Alone 1 + 2. Music, I absolutely love Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Christmas Eve Sarajevo is my definite favourite Christmas Song.

Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?

Yep! This ornament I had when I was a kid with my name on it. I can’t remember what happened to it, it probably broke as all Ornaments do.

What is the oddest gift you have ever received?

A driver safety training course, after having had my license for many years. Somehow it still makes me laugh, but at the end of the day it was kinda fun!

What is your favorite Holiday Food Item?

Roast turkey – with cranberry sauce… Oh and holiday cocktails!

What is your favorite Holiday family tradition that you still do today?

We open one present each Christmas Eve. Who can wait for Santa!?

Do you have a favorite holiday movie or song?

I have both a favorite holiday song and movie. My favorite holiday song is “White Christmas”, by Bing Crosby. It has extra poignancy for me, having grown up in Australia where a white Christmas really is only a dream! A close second is “Breath Of Heaven” by the lovely Amy Grant. My favorite holiday movie is “Love Actually”, and it competes annually with “The Holiday”.

Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?

Growing up we had a plastic Santa and sleigh with reindeer that mom would set under the tree every year. No matter how old and banged up that thing got we loved it and it seemed to have a life of it’s own, we found it so enchanting

* * * * * *

Fiona has available her heartwarming short story and song,”An L.A. Christmas Story & Song” now available on Itunes here. Make sure to pick this up tonight, cozy up by the tree and enjoy her inspirational and soul touching story that will have you feeling blessed. Her companion song, “A Christmas Blessing”  is magical and beautifully captures the spirit of the season.

What is the oddest gift you have ever received?

It’s not odd whatsoever now, but when I was about 6, my parents got me my first stereo. I was really surprised at the time because it looked like some incredibly advanced alien invention to me. I knew I liked singing, but that stereo completely opened up my entire passion for music and singing. I sang with it every single day and I still do to this day. I love it because now it’s almost looking vintage.

What is your favorite Holiday Food Item?

That is such a hard question because I love a lot of holiday food! I’m vegan, but I probably have to go with either pumpkin or pecan pie because those are some of my favorite flavors.

What is your favorite Holiday family tradition that you still do today?

Usually my family always sits down on Christmas Eve and has dinner. Instead of celebrating the next morning, it’s customary in Latin and European cultures to sit down with family and have huge dinner parties. We usually go to Mexico or Italy to see family which I love.

Do you have a favorite holiday movie or song?

I don’t have a song in particular, but I love hearing those really classic jazzy and almost bluesy holiday songs that malls will play in bookstores or cafés. It really sets the mood and brings that magical feel. My favorite movie definitely has to be “The Nightmare Before Christmas” because it’s the cutest movie ever.

Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?

When I was living with my best friend and her family last year, I got to help decorate the Christmas tree which was so much fun. It was a gigantic mess but the finished product was really nice. I remember the one ornament on the very top that her sisters and I all attempted vigorously to put on top of the tree, we didn’t succeed until about half an hour and almost fell of ladders but it was worth it.

Erin Johnson

Erin Johnson

Model, Actress,

(Tomb Raider, Featured Role in Asking Alexandria “The Death of Me” Video)

What is the oddest gift you have ever received?

I was an odd girl and had an odd Uncle, so let alone my Christmas gifts from him were far from normal. He was a scientist so he always got my sister and I things like lava lamps, strobe lights, these weird electro-magnetic balls that would react to touch, but when I was younger I had the weirdest fascination with rocks.  I had a crazy big rock collection, which I’m hoping is somewhere tucked away at my parents house because I haven’t seen it in years.  Most gifts I got were “normal” like clothes, stuffed animals, jewelry, but so far, rocks are by far the oddest gift. Please anyone feel free to send me a weirder gift. I feel like rocks isn’t odd enough.

What is your favorite Holiday Food Item?

I am a vegetarian and I am the only vegetarian in my family so no one likes making me “special” food. So besides a soy gingerbread latte from Starbucks I greatly enjoy my sweet tooth during the holidays. I never fill up from the fruit salad or pickles and olives and besides being a vegetarian I am also a very picky eater so basically that is all I eat at dinner. Then when dessert rolls around I am in heaven. I will eat anything chocolate and sweet. My grandma makes this dessert called “death by chocolate” and the name speaks for itself. Its like a chocolate mousse with whipped cream and dark chocolate cake pieces with heath bars all mixed together. It’s exactly what the name says, its TO DIE FOR.

What is your favorite Holiday family tradition that you still do today?

On Christmas Eve all of my aunts, uncles, and cousins go to my Grandma and Grandpa’s house.  We do this thing called “dollar gifts,” since we would love to gift everyone, but no one has the time or money to buy a gift for 30 people instead we only spend $30 total to get everyone a gag gift.  The rules are everything has to cost a dollar or less, so it makes for some really interesting surprises.  People tend to get me a lot of Hello Kitty stuff which I absolutely love, but some people get unlucky and get creepy old dolls or blatantly used dirty clothes. It’s all in good fun!

Do you have a favorite holiday movie or song?

Every Christmas season it is imperative that I watch “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” as much as possible.  Although I do love “Elf” and “Home Alone,” nothing beats Clark W. Griswald and his silly antics.

Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?

I’m originally from Minnesota, so living in LA I learned to appreciate being home for the holidays.  My mom decks the whole house out in Christmas decorations, which I always thought were corny, but now since I’m away from home and the arctic winter weather, I learned to appreciate being home for the hoidays a lot more. I would actually say that during the month of December my favorite holiday decoration is living in a winter wonderland covered in snow and having that cozy feeling of being bundled up next to a fire with hot chocolate or for me, usually Bailey’s. I love going ice skating in my backyard and the smell of bonfires and cinnamon, even though it’s so cold outside there’s something very warming about the winter. There’s no other greater feeling than being back in Minnesota for the holidays, but as soon as Christmas is over I am out and right back to sunny LA.

I can’t remember ever getting a gift that was particularly odd.  Although, I do find it kind of suspect when people give food as gifts.  Most of the time it seems as though they are just re-gifting food they got, but don’t want.

What is your favorite Holiday Food Item?

My favorite holiday food item would have to be Egg Nog.  There’s nothing like some good ol’ seasonal nog to get you in the holiday spirit!

What is your favorite Holiday family tradition that you still do today?

My favorite holiday tradition is the Christmas Eve party with family and friends.  It’s always great to get everyone together.

Do you have a favorite holiday movie or song?

You gotta go with “A Christmas Story.”  Leg lamp, triple dog dare and of course “…you’ll shoot your eye out” .

Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?

No angel.  No star.  Our Christmas tree always has Frosty The Snowman on top

Do you know what is coming up and you have to be ready for???? The premiere of Villains of Vaudeville‘s video for Demolition Baby!   If you don’t know who I am talking about, let me share my love for Villains of Vaudeville with you.

I have been secretly in love with my new favorite CD that has been hidden away because I just don’t want to lose this one to ANYONE! It has remnants of everything from Marilyn Manson to Rob Zombie with a hint of STP and everything in between!  Just as stated from Villains of Vaudeville, it is

  “Beats that threaten to entrance your soul. Riffs that will rake you from the flames of hell to the rapture of heaven… Listening is a surrender to the right of passage… an Initiation to the dance… You have been warned.”

That is so true in so  many ways. Youcan  just get lost in the music in the very best way. Drowning in a romantic array of lyrical beauty that is Kenny Kweens. It is as if he has handcuffs around my soul and I am just embraced by nasty riffs, dirty guitar, intense drum beats and incredibly soul touching vocals that creates  a pouring of my own soul. I love everything about this and want more! You will too when you get to treat yourself to some Villains of Vaudeville. Here is an interview with Kenny Kweens we want to share with you:

Music Junkie Press: Hi! Thank you for taking the time out for us to talk a bit about the Villains Of Vaudeville new debut CD ‘Villains De Vaudeville’ which we have been enjoying.

Kenny: Hello and thank you.

* * *

 Music Junkie Press: Your music has a bit of everything in there and truly is a collection of creative accomplishment! How long have you worked on this CD?

 Kenny:  It’s been in my head for a while. I started doing some demos for Villains of Vaudeville I guess about 5 years ago or so. I had some song ideas laying around that I wanted to record, so I called a really good friend (and producer), Tracy Swider, to help me with them. They came out pretty damn good, so the thought of calling the project something and throwing it out there came to mind. I dreamed up the name Villains Of Vaudeville. We got some good feedback from the demos, but I would get derailed with other projects to where I felt like I could never give VOV the proper attention it needed, so then I finally dedicated myself to make the record by pushing everything else to the side. Tracy Swider really urged me to do this and I’m glad he did. I’m very proud of what we accomplished. In my mind it’s a kick ass record.

Music Junkie Press: All of the songs on this CD are incredible and my personal favorites are “The Devil is Waiting” and “Black Heart Saints”, wait maybe “Motor Psycho” and “Dirty Star”. Well, they are all so great, hell I can’t decide!! Do you have a personal favorite or one that just really is special for you?

 Kenny:  I hate to come off sounding wrong, but I really like them all too. That was the goal. The goal was to make a record that we thought would be very bewitching from start to finish. I guess “The Devil is Waiting” will always have a special place in my blackened heart, it was one of the first ones that we put together, so it kinda set the bar. I really like “Motor Psycho” a lot too, I’ve always like the hard hitting high-octane type songs, and “Black Heart Saints” came out very well, the solo in “Black Heart Saints” is my favorite, so it is hard to pick one song and I think that’s a good thing.

 * * *

Music Junkie Press: You really have some great guitar work on a lot of the songs. Do you have a specific writing process, i.e. the music first or lyrics, etc?

Kenny: Yeah, the guitar work was done by Tracy Swider. He is one of the best, if not the best, guitarist I’ve ever worked with. Tracy and I orchestrated the music and then we brought Glen Sobel (Beautiful Creatures, Alice Cooper) to play the drums on the record and he is probably the best drummer I’ve ever worked with, so I felt like I had the best of the best in my corner, which made the fight easier to win. As far as the writing process, on some songs I came in with a lyric idea or even a title or chorus, but then some songs came from a cool riff, so there was no real formula and I think that is how most bands work.

 * * *

Music Junkie Press: How old were you when you first played guitar? Can you remember what was the first song you played in it’s entirety?

 Kenny: I don’t know… What I can remember is, I was a young kid bored one summer and saw an old beat up guitar in my father’s closet, so I pulled it out and started strumming on it. I think the first song was something simple like a song by The Ramones, like “I wanna be sedated” or something like that…

 * * *

Music Junkie Press: I know you have been working on the video for “Demolition Baby” with Sean Reed. If it is anything like “The Devil is Waiting”, we will be glued to it! Do you have an expected release date?

Kenny: The “Demolition Baby” video was filmed by Colin Pregent, directed by Sean Reed and edited by Sean and myself. It will be released June 18th. It isn’t like “The Devil is Waiting” video. It is quite the opposite actually. It is more colorful and has a more retro-surfer zombie feel. It’s more campy and cheeky. I wanted it to be different and I’ve always loved that retro sexploitation look of the 60’s and 70’s, you know that Bettie Page era. So we went with the whole female sex-bot thing. It’s a bit more of an up-beat side of VOV and it fits the song. It’s very close to what was going on inside my head when I wrote it. The next video after “Demolition Baby” will be for “Black Heart Saints” and that video is being filmed, directed and edited by James Disspain. Disspain also was the master mind behind “The Devil is Waiting” so you can expect that one to have that dark edge again.

Music Junkie Press: Here is a teaser for the video:

Music Junkie Press: This album brings to mind many artists like Rob Zombie or Alice Cooper, by far not in a comparison since you truly have your own individual style. What was some of the most influential albums/artists for you growing up?

Kenny: I take that as a compliment. I’m proud to be in this genre and in that company. I look at them as comrades not competition. We are and should be allies. I’m a huge fan of Zombie and Cooper. So much so, that we did a cover of the Alice Cooper song, “Is it My Body” on the record. I’ve met Rob briefly a few times and he always seems cool and I’ve also met Alice a bunch of times and he is one of the coolest, if not the coolest rock star ever, and that’s why I did his song on the record. The first big hit for Alice Cooper as you know was “I’m eighteen” well what you may not know is that the B-side to that 45 was “Is it My Body”, so that was the one I picked to do. For the second part of your question, I think the first record that really hit me hard in the right way was Nine Inch Nails “Pretty Hate Machine”. Trent Reznor is a genius and so underrated.

 * * *

Music Junkie Press: You really do an unbelievable job with Alice Cooper’s “Is it My Body” and just make it your own! If you could take a song from a completely different genre and turn in into your own, what might you choose?

 Kenny: You know that’s what I also wanted to do. I think it’s better to take a song from a completely different genre to cover, but I also liked our idea of paying homage to Alice Cooper and covering the B-side to a big hit, so it was a tough choice. Obviously Alice won. He always wins. There are a lot of songs out there that I’d like to vilify and I may, so instead of revealing that information, maybe it’s best to keep it locked up in this dirty mind of mine.

Music Junkie Press:  If you could go back and talk to your 14 year old self, what advice would you give to yourself?

 Kenny: Your best days are just ahead and you’re gonna have a blast!

* * * * * * *

Now that is advice good for any age! We all have to look forward to the future! Thank you so much Kenny for your time. We are going to share all your social media links with everyone and keep everyone up to date as to the release date of the videos. So mark your calendars for June 18th for the Demolition Baby video. I can’t wait for it!!

UPDATE June 18th:  Video for “The Devil is Waiting” is now out! Watch it here:
