My favorite artist, Justin Furstenfeld of Blue October has just released his new CD, Songs From an Open Book. The CD features songs and stories from his Open Book Tour and was released today.  We went to one of his shows on his Open Book Tour last year and it was one of the most amazing shows I have ever been to. The spirit in that room was soul touching and the intimate atmosphere allowed Justin to completely connect to the audience through his words and music. Check out our coverage from his Open Book Tour.  You can check out a preview from his CD here:

The CD can be purchased on iTunes here or through his merch site here which includes some really cool bundles. In addition Justin will be heading out on his Open Book Tour starting on September 4th at Rockin Rodeo in Denton, TX.  I highly recommend getting yourself to one of the dates and get your tickets early, because they will sell out!

Justin Furstenfeld

A few months ago I told you about how one of my favorite singers announcing his solo tour to highlight the release of the third edition of his book! Yes, Justin Furstenfeld of Blue October. You can read that post here.

Well, I can’t wait to tell you how everything went. First, remember when I told you I took my son Rockin Ryan to see Blue October in November 2012 and how Justin loved Ryan’s jacket and Ryan was going to make one?? Read that post here.  Well, Ryan spent the past two months making one for Justin and couldn’t wait to give it to him at the show last Friday at The Observatory in Santa Ana. We set out for the 7 hour drive right after dropping Brandon off to school, perfectly scheduled to arrive at 3:45 in plenty of time for the Meet and Greet and Soundcheck. Well, we didn’t calculate the 10 miles per hour traffic from LA to Santa Ana. 9 hours later! We arrived late at 5:25 and missed most of the private sound check songs but made it in time for Ryan to give Justin his jacket that he designed. It was great. He put three stars on the back top, one for Blue, one for Sayde  Bell and one for Sarah. He has the heart logo on the back with the words: “My Heart Bleeds Blue”. It really turned out nice and Justin was really gracious and liked it. Ryan is always so shy and was so nervous, hoping he would like it and after Ryan was grinning from ear to ear!

Well the night was incredible. “Open Book Tour” truly was an open heart experience. Justin poured himself out from the pages of his book and you were able to really get an intimate look into the life of Justin and his writings. I have been listening to him with Blue October for the past 15+ years and their music was like therapy for my soul. I instantly connected and was drawn into the Blue October family as so many have. It truly is like a family and when I meet someone who loves them as I do we seem to become instant friends, similar to how you might bond with someone you meet in rehab or a support group. You instantly know that they have been through something before and just like you, found solace and peace through the music of Blue October and Justin’s words. I have met people who have shared stories of how their music saved their lives and you know, I am one of them too. We are a family, caring for each other through music.

Back to the Open Book Tour, it was wonderful to see Justin in such a good happy place just like the last time I saw him. Yes, he talks about how happy he is and his life with Sarah and his new little girl. It is beautiful to see and witness how we have all grown and are becoming happier each day.  In addition to playing some of his greatest songs for us, he also did a Question/Answer session in between reading from his book. We even got to find out what Justin would like us to cook him for dinner and did you know that he likes “BlueBell Gingerbread ice cream” for dessert??? Some of the songs for the night were

  • Black Orchid
  • Clumsy Card House
  • Calling You
  • Hate Me
  • Into the Ocean
  • Graceful Dancing
  • Should Be Loved
  • Worry List
  • Define the Trail
  • The Scar

It was an incredibly awesome night. Some of these songs are so meaningful to me and I was so grateful to hear them. “Hate Me” was a song that I first heard when I was dealing so much anger in my life. It helped me through those hard times and to express my anger through music. “Into the Ocean” was a song that helped me through my losing my father in 2011. I would leave his bedside at the hospital every night to drive home for 4 hour sleep to return back to his side. On the ride how I would play this song over and over and it helped me cope with losing him. “Worry List” is the most special song for me. My father used to always tell me he couldn’t die on me or leave me because he worried so much about me. I remember when he was dying, he kept hanging on and it broke my heart. I remember whispering into his ear the day he died to not worry anymore about me, I was going to be fine. He died 20 minutes later and that song just reminds me to be strong and know that I will be okay.

There were some things that just ticked me off but I brushed them off. First we had to deal with a couple intoxicated people who kept talking at the beginning and interrupting Justin during the first couple songs. He quickly resolved that by having them removed. It was done so well and he said it perfectly when he said, “I want to use this time to connect with you guys and not to worry about some asshole.” Justin you did connect with us and we thank you for that. Later in the evening, we had to deal with the background noise of a band playing in the front of the Observatory. This was so unbelievably loud! So many of us complained and tried to get them to turn it down. So disrespectful to Justin and the entire show. Few minutes later, they started to play even louder, you can hear it on some of the last songs. One of the sound guys even apologized to all of us as he went in the back and asked them to turn it down too! Observatory should never be allowed to double book and especially during an acoustic show!

So here is what I need to tell you….. If you are anywhere CLOSE to one of Justin’s Open Book Tour: GET YOUR BUTT THERE!! When I say close, I am saying this show is worth driving 400+ miles to see! We drove it and would do it again in a second. So check out where Justin is playing next and get there! I have included the tour schedule below for you and head over to the Blue October website to get your tickets!

I have included some of my favorite videos of that night for you to take a look at and enjoy.

One of my favorite singers has just announced his solo tour to highlight the release of the third edition of his book! Yes, Justin Furstenfeld of Blue October has just announced dates for his solo tour titled, “An Open Book” An Evening with Justin Furstenfeld of Blue October.  This coincides with release of the expanded 3rd edition of his book of lyrics and writings dubbed “Crazy Making” due out on April 1, 2013.

These shows sound like they are going to be a lot fun and insightful as to the writings of Justin. Included with spoken word by Justin, there will be a Q & A session, and acoustic songs. You can also buy one of the very limited meet and greets with Justin and sit in on his sound check. As soon as I got the email, I got our tickets to the Santa Ana show at the Observatory on April 5, 2013.

This should be perfect timing for Ryan to finish the vest that he made for Justin. We saw Blue October just a couple months ago on November 10th at the Regency in San Francisco for “A Quiet Mind” Tour.  I wrote about how awesome they all were in my previous post. Blue October is at the peak of Perfection.   I included many videos and photos from that show.

So make sure to head over and pick up your tickets for this very special tour. For now, enjoy some of the videos from that November show.

Saturday night was a perfect one. I got to take my son Ryan to see my  all time favorite and most inspiring band, Blue October. The music of Blue October has personally helped me through some of my hardest times as well as energizing me in my good times. When my father passed away last year, “Into the Ocean” was a song that I played daily after leaving my father’s bedside and it kept me afloat!  I have often said that Blue October has been the rainbow through my storms, the light at the end of the tunnel, and the candle during my darkest hours. Oh, how I appreciate and love their music!

Blue October is currently on “the quiet mind tour” and made a stop at The Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, November 10, 2012.  I have been enjoying Blue October for almost 15 years and had the pleasure seeing them almost a dozen times. This concert I would have to declare the Best of the Best of all the times I have seen them. Don’t get me wrong, they always put out a great, great concert but this time, there was such a clarity of musical perfection that they all carried out. It was so apparent that  this was going to be a phenomenal concert and it was.

All of the band performed at 150%  and with the excellent song choices for this show, it was bound to be an incredible night. Justin Furstenfeld was simply captivating with his powerful vocals and intense honesty that he displays through his performance. I don’t think I have ever seen him so happy and in such a good place. It was wonderful to watch. Then you look to your left and you get the awe-inspiring performance of Ryan Delahoussaye on the voilin/viola, mandolin and keyboard. Ryan’s style on the violin brings such a deep dimension to their music that is an integral part of their sound. Listening to their music, you pick up the variety of intonation but when you get to watch Ryan play you really appreciate every technique and sound he delivers. You then turn to the right and have Matt Noveskey on bass guitar and backing vocals who delivers the perfect tone from his bass and engages you in his fierce bass lines. Julian Mandrake is on guitars and it was great to see his return to the band. Julian on the guitar can deliver the heavy sound needed to create the mood for the songs and was flawless.  To round out all the music and create that peak of perfection, you look back and see the smiling face of Jeremy Furstenfeld. I loved watching Jeremy on my favorite songs, “Dirt Room” and “Say It”.  He just kills it and is awesome!  The last song of the night was the grand finale of  “Italian Radio” that I have never been able to see live in concert. It not only summed up the evening with their shear display of intensity and energy on stage but you could feel the thrill of excitement just fill the room.  Afterwards as we were walking out, we kept hearing the same comments from the audience, “That was the best concert ever”, “WOW, what a show!” “I can’t believe they played all my favorites”. It was great to come away knowing that it was a collective appreciation of the amazing concert that we all witnessed.

Blue October is continuing on with their “quiet mind tour” and if you get a chance, make sure to check it out. I have included links below to the upcoming dates. It is bound to be a phenomenal concert and be a highlight of your concert memories.

My son Ryan had an incredible time and this was his 4th time seeing them. He got to meet the band prior to the concert and was overwhelmed. Justin liked Ryan’s handmade clothes and asked Ryan about making one for him. On the ride home, Ryan was already sketching out some designs and I am really impressed with what he has come up with. I think Justin is going to love it.

I have included on my facebook page the photographs of the evening and you can take a look at them by visiting  here.  You can also browse through the gallery below.  In addition, I have included video of a few of my favorite performancesof the night. I will continue to add more to the Youtube channel of RockinRyansGarage so keep checking it out.

In addition to the great performance by Blue October the opening bands of A Silent Film and Barcelona were remarkable and I will be following up with their own individual review which is greatly deserving.

So enjoy the music and get yourself to a Blue October show!
