To continue our coverage from Diamond Lane‘s CD Release Party from Saturday night….. As I mentioned it was a night full of awesome music. We told you earlier about The Book of Curtis and Diamond Lane, now let us tell you about another highlight of the evening; Love and a .38. There must have been some magic in the air because I could never imagine Love and a .38 to top their last performance that I saw of theirs back in March at the Troubadour. Well, they certainly did just that. It was a set filled with some old Love and a .38 tricks as well as some new ones up their sleeves. They came out full 150% adrenaline running through their veins and they had one thing on their mind…. To blow our minds with their show.
Ryan was as charismatic as ever and had the crowd under his rock and roll spell with his powerful vocals and seductive style. At one moment, I felt like Ryan was channeling Jim Morrison and was as engaging as a young Robert Plant. It was truly magical. Domo was a madman as he yielding out his thundering riffs and sweet solos as he jumped up on the customized light box. Justin was charged up and ready to go as he was having his way with Aurora (his bass) and he was lit up on his lightbox. He was fierce as he pounced across the stage with the prowess like a panther as he surveyed the crowd. Danny on drums was like a powerhouse of energy as he pounded out his drums and crashing the cymbals, while still putting on a show with his sticks. These gives were on fire and another highlight was when Ryan and Justin came down and joined the crowd as they didn’t miss a beat of their playing/singing. They also treated us to their FANTASTIC cover of Sunglasses at Night by Corey Hart. Check out the slide show of Rockin Ryan’s photos here:

Love and a .38 are currently working on their new album and this was going to be the last show for a while. They really sent off us off begging for more as we anxiously await their new album later this year and we can’t wait until the next time we can catch them live! Love and a .38 have a very dedicated fan base and they enjoy being actively involved through their social media sites, so go head over, follow them and send them some love. We will leave you with our interview with Justin, who ran into at this year’s NAMM Convention as his bass, Aurora was featured at the Hipshot booth. Make sure you read all our coverage on the bands; The Book of Curtis, Diamond Lane, Delta Rose and Bad Romantics.
Last month, we headed down to the Troubadour to cover Lara Gladstone’s Gutter n Grind event at the Troubadour in Hollywood. We were excited to know that Love and a .38 would be there as they never disappoint in putting on an amazing set. Sure enough, they were there to deliver straight up rock and roll to the crowd and everyone was feeling alive. Love and a .38 will always will have you under their rock and roll spell.
Love and a .38 harnessed the energy of the crowd and fueled it with their own, to create an excitement that could not be ignored. Whether you are caught in the powerful vocals of Ryan, the thundering riffs at the hands of Domo, the rousing bass lines of Justin or charged up by Danny on drums, one thing is for sure….. You are having a BAD ASS TIME! Together, these four with their individual personal styles, culminate and create a sound that needs to be heard. Whether you are a fan of classic or modern rock, blues, hard rock, alternative or anything else, you can’t help but be drawn to their music. During a time of genres, sub genres, etc they have proven to create a sstyle and music that will stand the test of time.
Check out the tribute videos that Rockin Ryan made complete with photos and footage from their set at the Troubadour:
Love and a .38 are currently finishing up their album which is set to release some time in Spring. Make sure to visit their social media sites so you can stay connected and updated on their upcoming shows and news. One thing is for sure, Love and a .38 have a very dedicated fan base and they enjoy being actively involved through their social media sites, so send them some love. We will leave you with our interview with Justin, who ran into at this year’s NAMM Convention as his bass, Aurora was featured at the Hipshot booth.
Another one of our favorite bands that we found at NAMM is Love and a .38. They are truly one of the hardest working bands in Los Angeles and have a tight family (fan) base that extends across the country! We ran into bassist, Justin Emord at the Hipshot Products booth at NAMM 2014. We were able to grab for a quick interview as he had his bass, Aurora on display. Check out our interview here:
We are excited to head down for Love and a .38’s upcoming show at the Troubadour in Hollywood on February 15th. Now I think I am going to have to crank up some Love and a .38 and I know the perfect song…. “Just a Woman”. That song is so bad ass and has such a bluesy classic rock sound to it and I just fell in love with it instantly. It has a great chorus that makes me want to cruise out on the open highway with no worries and my Love and a .38 turned up loud. If you don’t have it, head right on over to Itunes and pick it up!
You can also check out their funny music video for Just a Woman which features Master Bruce Stevens. Keep your eyes open for the wet and wild gratuitous car wash scene. Here is the video:
Make sure to visit their social media sites so you can stay up to date on all their news. We will keep you updated on their upcoming album release.

What is the oddest gift you have ever received?

Being my family is from New York, I love all the jokes and humor pertaining to the city in it and Nightmare Before Christmas, need I say more? It’s one of my all time favorites.
Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?
My memory is of the miniature artificial Christmas tree my parents would set up for me when I was a kid every year in my room. Nowadays, I set up that same tree with many of the same Disney Ornaments from back then on top of an old bass cabinet I used and line the whole thing in Christmas lights . And of course, add some Halloween flare to the whole set up.

What is the oddest gift you have ever received?
Well first of all, I am thankful for any gift I receive, so don’t this twisted, but I do remember my family was going through a rough patch, so my gifts were a bit odd this one year. My big gift was a “vintage” pachinko machine. A what? Yeah I know, that’s what I said when I got it.. I didn’t ask for one, hell I didn’t even know they existed, so I had no idea what I was looking at when I unwrapped it. A pachinko machine is a Korean pinball machine. Anyway, at first I was a bit confused and thought I had unwrapped the wrong gift, but I was a understanding kid and before I knew it, me and my friends were having pachinko tournaments.
What is your favorite Holiday Food Item?
Mama Kweens’ Gumbo!
What is your favorite Holiday family tradition that you still do today?
My scavenger hunt. I always pick someone every year and will wrap a box with a note inside… That note has a clue to find the next gift with another note inside to find the next gift with another note and clue inside and so on and so forth until the person finds their actual gift. This can be hours of fun, as it can go on for a while and it gives me great pleasure watching people wandering around trying to figure out my poorly written riddles. I’ve sent people down the street, to other homes, inside of cars, up in trees.. Oh the joy of Christmas.
Do you have a favorite holiday movie or song?
My favorite movie would be that old stop-animation movie with the cold miser and heat miser. Those two guys crack me up and their theme songs are hilarious! I think it’s called, “The Year Without a Santa Claus”, I love all those old stop-animation movies and my favorite song would be “Please Come Home For Christmas” the version by The Eagles.
Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?
My Mom is an awesome decorator. Her decorations are the best I’ve ever seen. Her stuff should be in magazines, it’s better than what you see in high-end department stores and she does it all with arthritic hands. She is absolutely amazing! She tops herself every year, which makes it hard to pick a favorite, but if I had to, it would be the little black tree she puts in my room when I visit.
Kent Brooks

What is the oddest gift you have ever received?
We had a mate from Canada stay with our family in NZ one Xmas. He put big presents under the tree for everyone, and we felt bad that he’d spent all his money doing that. Then we opened them and realized he’d done his shopping at the Dollar Store! Haha… Mine was like a plastic toy piano.
What is your favorite Holiday Food Item?
Xmas is in Summer in NZ, so you gotta fire up the Barbie! Wash it down with a few Steinlager Pures… Finish it off with Pavlova for dessert, which is Kiwi fav

Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?
When I was a kid one year I didn’t know what to get Mum, so I tried to make her a Xmas wreath. I couldn’t figure out how to make the chicken wire round, so the wreath is a square! But it actually came out ok, and she loved it. I’m pretty sure if you drove past the house today you’d see it hanging on the door!

What is the oddest gift you have ever received?
Christmas or in general? Haha I’ll answer both, for Christmas, I received a Backstreet Boys CD at like 12, and while I’m not knocking them, the Backstreet Boys have never been my type of music ever lol. Maybe when I was 7-8 when all the girls went nuts for them, but by 12, I was into the stuff I’m into now.
Oddest gift ever?? My 18th birthday, where my buddies decided to bake me a “shit” cake, they literally threw everything in the kitchen in there, stuck it in the oven, and “baked” me a cake lol. I took a bite and it was horrendous but I felt the love haha.
What is your favorite Holiday Food Item?
Well I’m Portuguese, my entire family is, so I’m totally looking forward to all the food my grandmothers gonna cook up! But totally can’t wait for that Portuguese –wait for it—TURKEY! In Montreal, Portuguese chicken is like food fashion, people line-up everywhere they make it to get some chicken, but I’m waiting for my home cooked Turkey!!
What is your favorite Holiday family tradition that you still do today?
Ever since I was born, we’d go to my Grandmother’s house on Christmas Eve. The entire family is there (way bigger now than when I was 5-6), and it’s just a great time without any worries. We’d get gifts at midnight (since we wouldn’t see each other till the week after), and just continue the fun there. The tradition has changed, I now enjoy watching my younger cousins open their gifts! And all the grandchildren take a photo on this staircase at my grandmothers house. I’m the eldest grandchild, and the youngest is 2 and theres 8 other children in between, so that staircase is plenty full. Although, I’m trying to “retire” myself from this photo since I’m closer to having my own kids then being a grandchild lol.
Do you have a favorite holiday movie or song?
Oh of course! Jingle All The Way! The movie with Arnie! TURBOOOO MAN! Home Alone 1 + 2. Music, I absolutely love Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Christmas Eve Sarajevo is my definite favourite Christmas Song.

Roast turkey – with cranberry sauce… Oh and holiday cocktails!
What is your favorite Holiday family tradition that you still do today?
We open one present each Christmas Eve. Who can wait for Santa!?
Do you have a favorite holiday movie or song?
I have both a favorite holiday song and movie. My favorite holiday song is “White Christmas”, by Bing Crosby. It has extra poignancy for me, having grown up in Australia where a white Christmas really is only a dream! A close second is “Breath Of Heaven” by the lovely Amy Grant. My favorite holiday movie is “Love Actually”, and it competes annually with “The Holiday”.
Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?
Growing up we had a plastic Santa and sleigh with reindeer that mom would set under the tree every year. No matter how old and banged up that thing got we loved it and it seemed to have a life of it’s own, we found it so enchanting

What is the oddest gift you have ever received?
It’s not odd whatsoever now, but when I was about 6, my parents got me my first stereo. I was really surprised at the time because it looked like some incredibly advanced alien invention to me. I knew I liked singing, but that stereo completely opened up my entire passion for music and singing. I sang with it every single day and I still do to this day. I love it because now it’s almost looking vintage.
What is your favorite Holiday Food Item?
That is such a hard question because I love a lot of holiday food! I’m vegan, but I probably have to go with either pumpkin or pecan pie because those are some of my favorite flavors.
What is your favorite Holiday family tradition that you still do today?
Usually my family always sits down on Christmas Eve and has dinner. Instead of celebrating the next morning, it’s customary in Latin and European cultures to sit down with family and have huge dinner parties. We usually go to Mexico or Italy to see family which I love.
Do you have a favorite holiday movie or song?
I don’t have a song in particular, but I love hearing those really classic jazzy and almost bluesy holiday songs that malls will play in bookstores or cafés. It really sets the mood and brings that magical feel. My favorite movie definitely has to be “The Nightmare Before Christmas” because it’s the cutest movie ever.
Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?
When I was living with my best friend and her family last year, I got to help decorate the Christmas tree which was so much fun. It was a gigantic mess but the finished product was really nice. I remember the one ornament on the very top that her sisters and I all attempted vigorously to put on top of the tree, we didn’t succeed until about half an hour and almost fell of ladders but it was worth it.

What is the oddest gift you have ever received?
Ha.. Ok, I’m going to give a 2 part answer to this question.
From a family member.. Definitely the box of Kleenex Tissue I received from my Grandma when I was about 10 years old. She said it was something I could really use because whenever we would play games, I would always end up crying. Hahaha.. Now as true as this may be.. she cheated like crazy!!! So for a 10 year old.. that was tough to take!. Luckily for me and for the rest of Christmas day, that box of Kleenex was followed up with a real present.
Now .. part 2.. Oddest gift from a fan. I had an evening with a girl who will not be named and later gave this girl my phone number from a state that also won’t be named. There were a few texts and calls over the next 4 months, but nothing serious. Then about 2 weeks before Xmas, she calls me and I answer and she says “I’m here! At the airport.. I flew in to surprise you for your early xmas present”. Now I had zero info that this was ever going to happen. So being nice I had to pick her up.. Horrible decision!
Without going into detail.. Needless to say.. what ensued was one of the weirdest 5 days of my life. Haha!
What is your favorite Holiday Food Item?
Well.. Ive always been extremely fond of the Jack Daniels or the occasional Wine Slam!
Lately I’ve been heavily into Deviled Egg’s for some reason.. I am Devilish but no idea why these things have consumed me. They will all be nicely laid out on a fancy tray chillin in the fridge and I’ll sneak one here and there throughout the day. Then at dinner time they get served, and of course the tray looks ridiculous haha. Half of them missing.. some turned over and yellow egg smeared everywhere.. One with a bite out of it but the other half still there. I’m fairly confident that my family will be making me my own baby tray of these this year.
What is your favorite Holiday family tradition that you still do today?
This is a tough one. The reason being is my family isn’t all centrally located. For instance, I’m in Los Angeles.. My Parents are in the Detroit area.. one of my sisters are in Arkansas.. add in the brother in laws and kids and their families ect and it gets really tough to schedule.. let alone hold traditions. Not to mention tour schedules as well.
But the one tradition in all that craziness is that we all always try to make sure that we are HOME at my parents house on Christmas morning. It may only be for a few hours.. but for those few hours and breakfast and gift opening.. thats Christmas and truly our Christmas tradition.
Do you have a favorite holiday movie or song?
I do. My all time favorite Xmas song has always been Little Drummer Boy. Maybe that is why my first instrument was drums. Still to this day when I hear that song, I immediately think of Christmas and my first drum set that my Grand parents bought me. It was a set of very used drums.. But they were Pearl’s, and thats what Peter Criss from Kiss played.. so to me.. they were the best drums ever made!
Favorite Holiday Movie would have to be Christmas Vacation. Chevy ruled back then!
Do you have a specific memory of a certain ornament or holiday decoration?
Amazing question! Absoloutely! My Mom always made sure that we decorated the tree together as a family when we were kids. Of course this would usually end up with me and my older sister fighting about where certain ornaments went on the tree, especially our signature ornaments! Haha. When we were babies my Mom got us each certain ornaments that were ours and these were the one’s that only we individually could hang. So.. what did I do.. I would hang and hide my sisters ornaments hidden way in the back of the tree or sometimes in the tree haha and again that would culminate in a colossal fight. I’ve also added some Kiss, AC/DC and Ozzy ornaments to the tree over the years, But those original ornaments that now look really old and tattered, because they are old, will always be my favorites and they definitely hold the memories of Christmas past in them.
Ohh.. and Mom if your reading this.. WAIT TILL I GET HOME TO HANG MY ORNAMENTS AND HIDE THEM FROM JEN! Merry Christmas Everyone.. Rock n Roll!

What is the oddest gift you have ever received?
The oddest gift? Mmm. Oh My Gosh, my Grandma, she is hilarious. I don’t think she knew it was weird but it was the funniest thing. She gave us a little bag of old things that she found around her house. (Music Junkie Press: That is so cute!) But one of them was, I don’t know what they were called, You know in a lingerie drawer there is a scented little bra looking thing. (Music Junkie Press: Yes, the scented sachet packs!) Ya, that is like the weirdest thing that I ever got.
What is your favorite holiday food?
I eat so much food, I love food, I have no idea. I don’t think I could choose. I would have to say Turkey, I love turkey.
What is your favorite Holiday family tradition that you still do today?
I love Christmas Eve. We go to my Grandmas that night and do presents and everything.
That is it for Part 1 of our Holiday Q & A, we will bring you a whole new batch of artists and musicians tomorrow. Stay tuned~

I have been enjoying the new song “Just a Woman”by one of my favorite bands, Love and a .38. I know I have told you about them several times before (featured as one of our 12 Days of Rock Christmas) and I hope by now, you all have added their music to your playlists especially “Rock ‘n Lola” and “Lovely Lies”. These rockers are some of the hardest working guys in the business that are on a mission to deliver that much needed rock sound that we have all been missing and craving! They are not only working on their new album, but have been kicking ass performing shows in LA as well as heading out to SXSW later this week.
Before they head out to their next show, we were able to catch up with their incredibly talented, high energy bassist Justin Emord.

Music Junkie Press: Thanks Justin for taking time out with us at Music Junkie Press. We love the new song, “Just a Woman” and can’t wait for more new music!! How old were you when you first started playing?
Justin Emord:I first started playing piano in 4th grade in the concert band, moved to guitar in 7th grade and bass in 11th. Throughout, I played all 3 in concert band and Jazz band which helped me build dexterity and technique.

Music Junkie Press:Who were some of your musical influences and do you have a particular album favorite?
Justin Emord: Randy Rhoads was the first guitar player I ever got into. His blending of classical music into rock was very interesting for me being classical/concert music was where I started out in music. )His offset V and 1970’s Les Paul is also what really made me favor white finished instruments and is why my Blayzer bass is painted white.) I then got into Van Halen, AC/DC and other classic rock bands of the 70’s and 80’s because growing up, my parents always had Arrow 93 and KLOS on the radio so that indirectly set me down a music path that favored those artists. My favorite albums when I first got into playing music were Beatles Anthology 1 and Appetite for Destruction, both of which I still love to this day.

Music Junkie Press:How and when did you join Love and a .38?
Justin Emord:This is actually an interesting story. From 2008-2011 I played in a band called Spektra but before joining them, I saw an ad on myspace that .38 was looking for a bass player. My email got lost in the mix of the other bassists trying to audition so plan B; I joined Spektra but continued to go to .38 shows in the meantime because I really liked their sound and stage show. January 2011 I went to Winter NAMM in Anaheim and I finished up a signing appearance for one of my sponsors, exited the booth and saw Danny and Krishna walk past and looked at my ex and pointed em out and told her how much I liked them. I had seen Danny around the strip plenty so he came up and we chatted. Jokingly, I asked if they were looking for a bassist and he replied, “Actually-” Before he could finish, I pulled out my business card, wrote my number down and said “call me, I want in.” He called me the following week, I did 2 auditions with them and 3 weeks after that initial phone call, I was on the road doing my first gig in Arizona with them. The rest you could say is history.

Music Junkie Press: Rig Rundown: Can you tell us about your current gear?
Justin Emord: Currently I use my custom signature bass loaded with Active EMG pickups into my Pedal Train pedal board- Line 6 X2 Wireless, Ashdown Bass Drive Plus, Boss TU-2 Tuner, Tech 21 Sans Amp and into my Ashdown ABM Evo 500 head with my 2 Ashdown ABM 410 cabs. By far, this is the best rig I’ve used and each part is an absolute essential to my tone. My Ashdown distortion pedal is definitely the secret weapon on my board though.

Music Junkie Press:I know you guys have been busy in the studio, what does Love and a .38 have in store for us?
Justin Emord:We just released “Just a Woman” and have another 3 songs in the works right now, hopefully have most if not all of them ready to go the next time we play in Los Angeles. Other than that, just keep active doing shows and growing the Love and a .38 to other cities and countries.
* * *
Music Junkie Press:I heard you are heading out for SXSW, will this be your first time out to it?
Justin Emord:This will actually be our second year at SXSW. It’s nonstop bands from about 10 or 11 am till 2 in the morning so it’s really cool to be surrounded by so much music. We have 2 shows every day of SXSW this year so we’re going to be very busy out in Austin.

Music Junkie Press:This year we were able to catch you again at NAMM. What would you say were some of your highlights of the show?
Justin Emord: Highlights this year for me were of course reconnecting with all my sponsors, watching the Yamaha All Star Jam, and seeing my friends in New Years Day play at the Schecter Party, they killed it! NAMM overall is just a great experience because you’re surrounded by so many people who share your passion for music. There’s no way for that passion to not rub off on you and feel inspired and motivated by it all.
* * *
Music Junkie Press:Did you find any new toys or what were some of the coolest gear you found?
Justin Emord: I found this company called Stage Trix that I work with now. They make a velcro type of material to attach your pedals to your pedal board as well as a water based glow in the dark pen to mark your settings on your pedals, super cool stuff and I’m excited to work with them. Loxx also makes some cool strap locks that caught my eye. They use the weight of your instrument to lock your strap instead of the nut/washer we’re all used to seeing. I could go on for days about other cool stuff I saw there but those two companies definitely stood out.
* * *
Music Junkie Press: How do you deal with the NAMMover that we all get?
Justin Emord: NAMM ending is always bittersweet but after saying my farewells to my sponsors, the cure for my “last day syndrome” as I call it when NAMM ends is a trip across the street to Disneyland. Usually a couple of my friends meet me there and we hang out and I tell them the stories from the weekend and then I settle back into normal life with rehearsals and band business and come back down to earth after what is usually an incredible weekend.
* * *
Music Junkie Press:What would be your Dream Concert lineup? 3 bands/artists, living or dead.
Justin Emord: I would love to see Velvet Revolver, AC/DC and Jet do a gig. New school hard rock meets the godfathers of it. When I first heard “Slither” and “Cold Heart Bitch” I was stoked and my ears perked up. It was raw, rough around the edges hard rock with great vocals and killer guitars. It’s a real shame that VR and Jet don’t do things anymore because the first albums from both bands are still heavily played in my iPod.
* * *
Music Junkie Press:How about a peak at your Ipod or Playlist? Can you tell us what would the next 3 songs be?
Justin Emord: “Flamenco a Go Go” from Steve Stevens, anything from the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack and “Ride” from Beautiful Creatures. Steve Stevens, while known for being this guitar hero in Billy Idol’s band, is an incredibly talented spanish acoustic guitar player and I absolutely love is acoustic work. Beautiful Creatures was a cool band in the early 2000’s that was a GNR meets AC/DC with a slightly more aggressive edge kind of band and Ride is just a cool high octane rock track from their first album. And Nightmare Before Christmas, two words: Danny Elfman. There’s really no explanation for that, Danny is just great at what he does and I love that movie.

Music Junkie Press: I know you love Disneyland so how about if you were to create a rock and roll attraction at Disneyland, what would it be?
Justin Emord: Yeah, I’m totally a Mouseketeer at heart and they already have an Aerosmith themed coaster in Florida so I wouldn’t mess with perfection. Aerosmith and Disney, can you really go wrong with that combination??
* * *
Music Junkie Press:If you could take any song from any genre and ROCK it up and turn it into a Love and a .38 style song, what would it be?
Justin Emord: I would love to pretty much do any song from the Beatles. They were truly the first band that I was enthralled in and Anthology 1 was the first cassette I went out and bought with my own money when I was in 3rd or 4th grade.
* * *
Music Junkie Press: Can you share three things that we probably don’t know about you with our audience???
Justin Emord: That I started out with music on piano, I actually won rock/alternative guitarist of the year in 2007 from Music Connection Magazine and the 16 that is featured on some of my tattoos, bass picks and other gear started from the first two guitars I got from my first sponsorship because both were serial number 00016 amongst other major coincidences in my life that revolve around that number so I just adapted it as part of my identity and me as a person.
* * *
Music Junkie Press: Lastly, if you could rid the world of one TV show , Song, or Artist, which would they be?
Justin Emord: MTV in general. When they first started, MTV was the way bands like Guns N Roses and Motley Crue broke through to the mainstream because they showed music videos. I can’t even remember the last time I heard of a band getting off the ground because of exposure of their music video on MTV. If they ever do show music videos these days, it’s just hip hop and rap artists which is unfortunate. The world would be a better place without shows about fist pumping on the east coast and making teen moms famous, don’t you agree?
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
I couldn’t have said it any better and I truly agree. I miss those days of music videos. I can still remember the first time I saw MTV, it was three months after it had launched and I stayed glued to it the entire weekend. I had friends to come over to watch since were lucky enough to get it. Those were some great times. We may not have the videos to watch these days on TV but thanks to Love and a .38 we do have the incredible rock and roll music to enjoy!
Justin also told us that their website is being launched this month and will be complete with a webstore where you buy CDs, Picks, T-shirts to feed your Love and a .38 addiction. I know I will be one of the first to order! Check their upcoming tour dates and if you are lucky enough to be near where they are playing – get yourself to a show. Your faith in Rock and Roll music will be restored, I promise….
~ Enjoy, Marisol
