We have been loving the first song off their new album, Sonic Highways. The song is called Something From Nothing and is really going to grab a hold of you. The song has the perfect build up and takes you from a solemn intro into that fierce intensity of Dave Grohl’s vocals amid some heavy guitars that have you swirling. I love it!!! It screams 70’s classic rock yet with such a Foo Fighters flair. Check it out here:

radioblack

It was only a couple weeks ago where we told you about the great new song, Run Away by Radio Black featuring Foo Fighter’s Taylor Hawkins on drums. You can read that original post here. The grunge three piece rock band, Radio Black recorded the song at Dave Grohl‘s studio and home of the famed Sound City mixing console, Studio 606.  “Run Away,” is the first song off a to-be-announced upcoming album.  Check out the new song here:

They recorded three songs for their new album, which was recorded and produced by John “Lou” Lousteau, Fireball Ministry front-man and “Sound City” documentary producer Jim Rota, and Brad Smith of Blind Melon and features  appearances from studio players including Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy Osbourne), Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction), and Mick Murphy (My Ruin, Chevy Metal).

Now they are ready to finish this album and you can be a part of the making of this highly anticipated debut album. The band hopes to raise $12,000 to go back to the studio where they recorded the first 3 songs of their debut album, using the Sound City Neve 8028 analog mixing console, previously graced by the likes of Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fleetwood Mac, Paul McCartney and of course, the Foo Fighters.  Incentives range from digital MP3 downloads, to personalized thank you videos, and fans can even pledge to receive executive producer credits on the album.

Head over to their Kickstarter campaign page for more information or to pledge a contribution here: http://kck.st/Wd9muU

This band has such a great grunge/alternative style with hints of seventies classic rock, complete with compelling vocals, catchy chorus and melody rich in tones. I look forward to what Radio Black has in store for us.  The powerhouse trio consists of lead singer/guitarist TJ Courtney, drummer Derek Geldhill, founding member of Smile Empty Soul, and bassistDan Kremer, a seasoned touring musician.

About recording at Studio 606 with the same Neve 8028 analog mixing console previously used by his childhood musical inspirations including Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Foo Fighters – Radio Black lead singer/guitarist TJ Courtney explains, so he “Recording the song was somewhat of a nerve-racking experience. The first couple days at 606 were devoted to sorting out instrumental arrangements, tracking drums, bass, and guitars. Everything was going very smoothly and I felt very comfortable, until it was time to track vocals. Maybe it was just my nerves, but after spending time in the studio and working with some of the amazing rock musicians involved days prior, I now felt intimidated,” He continues, “More jitters started to pop up when I started thinking about all the artists that had recorded in the room recently, like Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicksand Trent Reznor. The first mic setup didn’t seem to be a good match for my voice, and things weren’t clicking right off the bat…We took a much needed lunch break and I was super nervous thinking, ‘What if I can’t get these vocals down? This whole thing would be a bust.’

Luckily, after lunch Lou returned with a different mic and after channeling every ounce of his confidence, Courtney was able to try again. “I calmed myself down and just tried to relax and connect with the song, instead of thinking about all the other crap. Then I felt a moment of calm and belted out the first take on the chorus. It felt good! Then Rota and Lou both chimed in, ‘That’s what we’ve been looking for man! Nice Job!’ Then it was smooth sailing from there.”

About the inspiration for “Run Away” Courtney explains that it’s a song “about taking risks in life and having the courage to abandon your prejudices, restrictions and anything else holding you back from being who you really are.”

So stay tuned for more new music by Radio Black and make sure to visit their social media sites.

The Washington Post reported yesterday about a surprise Foo Fighters show at the 9:30 Club in DC this past Monday night.  What was supposed to be a birthday bash for Trouble Funk bassist Big Tony Fisher actually turned out to be a surprise show from their hometown hero Dave Grohl and their mega uperstar band Foo Fighters. “I’m so glad I got to grow up here,” Grohl said from the stage while toasting Trouble Funk. “Because as a drummer, there’s no city funkier than Washington, D.C.”

The night was filled with stories, great performances, and a night that no one would soon forget. Dave opened the show by keeping time for the Don’t Need Its, a band featuring bassist Darryl Jenifer and guitarist Dr. Know of Bad Brains, and vocalist Pete Stahl, frontman of Grohl’s pre-Nirvana punk group, Scream.  They went on to play many early Bad Brains songs. The Don’t Need Its are Pete Stahl (Scream), Darryl Jenifer & Dr. Know (Bad Brains) and Dave on drums. (this may turn out to be more than a one time show)!

Trouble Funk went on to perform with with his entire crew, the 13-piece band played for 80 minutes including fan favorites like “Pump Me Up” and “Let’s Get Small,” sound tidy and tight.

The intimate setting served as an amazing backdrop as the musicians shared stories of how they started and the past. The Foo Fighters then performed and brought their high energy to new levels. They didn’t play any of the new songs but Dave spoke very highly of them and we are all so excited for the new album. They played the hits — “My Hero,” “This Is A Call,” “Everlong,” “Times Like These,” “The Best Of You,” “The Pretender”  and during “Monkey Wrench” Dave hopped on the bar and played his smoking guitar solo as he continued to walk across the bar.

What a night that must have been!! Foo Fighters are no strangers to putting on secret or surprise shows, you just have to be alert and on the look out for the signs, and most of all, get ready to DROP EVERYTHING and drive to the venue IMMEDIATELY!!!

I will leave you with photographs of the last time we covered the Foo Fighters when they came to town and we look forward to their return.
