Charlee Conley of Farewell, My Love Interview

Glam rock isn’t dead, folks! Theatrical rock is slowly returning, and heading up the crowd is a group that if you don’t know them yet, you definitely need to! Farewell, My Love is a band I can only describe as Tim Burton’s version of a hair metal band. Stage costumes, a few well placed lights and fog machines isn’t all this band has to offer though! They bring a beautiful glam rock style back to a genre that was desperately in need of a new sound. Farewell, My Love has obvious influences from bands like My Chemical Romance, but they’ve made it all their own. These guys bring their passion to the stage; a passion shared equally throughout the band. Bassist Charlee Conley recently spoke with Drift N Die Press about the future of the band, the memories they’ve gained, and gave us insight towards his own personal influences.

From L to R: Charlee Conley, Chad Kowal and Robby Creasey

DND: What’s the general concept & mission of Farewell, My Love?

Charlee: From day one, we’ve always labeled ourselves as “Theatrical Rock.” We’d like to become characters and be larger than life. We show this in the songs we write and our stage performance. Our mission has been to change lives, create a positive outlook for others and change the music lifestyle to something that we can be all proud of. Writing songs that mix real life situations with fictional story lines to give fans a great message to live by.

DND: How’d you all meet & how’d you guys get started as a band?

Charlee: I personally have been in a few bands. The last show I played with my previous band was with F,ML. It was a showcase at the Viper Room in Hollywood. Though I never really talked to anyone from the band that night, I did watch them play. A few months later when they were looking for a new bassist, I was someone they had remembered. I taught myself the songs in 2 weeks and drove out to Arizona to try out for them.

DND: Can you give some insight towards the new album you’ve been teasing?

Charlee: I’m really excited for this upcoming album. The writing, the process, the ideas, have all been great so far. We have a lot of things we are working on currently so to mention anything would be jumping the gun.

DND: Of all the songs you’ve written in your history as a musician, which meant the most to you & why?

Charlee: I’ve been lucky enough to be able to express myself through writing songs and lyrics. It’s helped me so much to get through a lot of dark times. Two songs that mean the most to me is “Skip The Memories” and “Meet Me In Seattle.” Both were written about my best friend Chris, who passed away over 5 years ago. Best friends for 17 years and not a day goes by that I don’t think about him. It hurts, so I am grateful I got to write about it and hopefully help others who have went through the same experience.

DND: Outside of your own songs, what’s one song that will always touch your heart?

Charlee: That’s such a hard question to answer. I’ve had so many songs impact my life. I love the feeling I get when you hear that perfect song, when you’re in the right mood that just opens your heart up. It really is an amazing feeling to share a connection with a song and it’s lyrics; the power that it can have on you. My favorite song in the whole world is “Disconnected” by Face To Face. Never have I felt so alive as when the first time I heard that song.

DND: What 3 albums would you want to be buried with?

Charlee: “Exile in Oblivion” by Strung Out, “Shoot the moon” by Face To face, “Everything Sucks” by Descendents.

DND: I know you’ve had tons of humbling experiences w/ fans. Can you share any that stuck out?

Charlee: It’s amazing the amount of experiences I’ve had with so many fans. Sometimes I find it so hard to believe that I’ve helped someone with the problems they’ve had in life. Talking to a man I met once that had been born deaf was one that sticks out. It made me realize how lucky I am to be able to play and listen to music. He had surgery that allowed him to hear up to 60% of what a normal person would hear. His favorite thing to do now is attend concerts.

DND: So far, what has been your favorite memory made with your band?

Charlee: My favorite memory is when we played House of Blues Chicago. The whole day was surreal and playing at such an amazing venue in front of so many kids was a dream come true for me.

DND: What’s the best tour prank you’ve either pulled or been victim to?

Charlee: The funniest tour prank I’ve ever seen was at the end of the Alesana tour. They taped and shrank wrapped our entire van and had put ripped out porn magazine pictures all over it.

DND: What’s your general reaction towards fan fiction?

Charlee: I’m pretty sure I feel more awkward than them. Sometimes it’s hard to process.

DND: You all have individual influences, but as a whole, who is your biggest inspiration as a band?

Charlee: This band has no boundaries on our music. We are inspired by everything and want to always showcase it in our music.

DND: On an individual basis, what bands inspire you?

Charlee: I’m a punk kid at heart. Strung Out and Face To Face will always be my biggest inspirations. From the music to the lyrics, it truly has changed my life.

DND: What’s it like to know you inspire others?

Charlee: It’s a great feeling. I have the opportunity to help so many, to encourage others to do great things. I have the best job in the world.

DND: Finally, what’s down the road for the band, and where would you like to be in your career by this time next year?

Charlee: I really want to build this band into something more. I’d like to branch out to organizations and charities to help the community, to continue the path we are destined to be on. This time next year I hope to be on tour and hopefully preparing to start touring overseas.

Rock & Rebel Tour Review

This summer Farewell, My Love and Jamie’s Elsewhere ban together, along with many other bands, to bring us another phenomenal tour. These crazy boys set out to do over fifty dates in under three months! Now if that isn’t dedication, I don’t know what is!

I was lucky enough to catch them towards the start of the tour down in Burnsville, Minnesota at The Garage. To anyone in the area, I definitely recommend this venue if you’re looking for an intimate show with a good atmosphere and friendly folks.

The concert opened with local band, In Light of Us, rocking the house. Though the band has yet to gain much traction, they are very talented and deserve some recognition. They created a great energy in the room for lionfight to follow up with a theatrical, bone chilling performance.

lionfight and fellow co-opener Incredible’ Me both bring screaming to the table, but what lionfight lacks in softer vocals, they make up for with aesthetics. With a lead singer sporting white-out contacts and a torn up shirt, plus a guitarist that made many girls scream by rolling his eyes in the back of his head, their act is vaguely reminiscent of Rob Zombie’s horror movie worthy performances. However, they bring a much more modern sound.

As far as Incredible’ Me goes, I could honestly tell you I have no way of classifying this unordinary band. Their unique sound consists of pop punk mixed with screamo. That’s something you don’t find everyday! I can promise, as weird as it may sound, the band rocks this mix. They’ve also got something else you don’t see every day; a female guitarist! Yes, folks, that’s right! Hayley Williams isn’t the only chick that knows how to rock. Coming from the mouth of a female myself, I can tell you it’s a very empowering feeling to see a woman on stage, headbanging next to a bunch of guys! Incredible’ Me has a great sound, awesome line-up, and overall inspiring message.

After a great set of opening bands, Jamie’s Elsewhere came out and shook the walls! Literally, the walls shook as they blasted the speakers! These guys know how to jam, and so do the fans. Jamie’s Elsewhere manages what many screamo bands tend to lack; balance. Many lead singers these days choose to just scream through a song, but Jamie’s Elsewhere brings a perfect balance between singing and screaming. Their sound is one that travels through the mind and causes an uproar with fans.

The night was closed off with the guys everyone came for; Farewell, My Love! Being the first time I’ve seen the band live, I was absolutely blown away by the energy they carry. Much like many bands emerging in rock recently, they works hard to bring back the showmanship of the ’80s. With Mötley Crüe-esc stage outfits (handmade by Brent Ashley of Arrogant Armor) and a guitarist rockin’ Sebastian Bach’s hair, it’s easy to see the influence of glam rock in Farewell, My Love.

Don’t be fooled though! They aren’t another group of Poison wanna-be’s. Farewell, My Love has a beautiful sound of modern rock and, I’d even bargain to say, a little modern vaudeville. Much like Panic! At The Disco, they incorporate a very vibrate theater sound, along with a positive message and vibe reminiscent of My Chemical Romance.

If you ask me, I believe these guys will be the next MCR. Guitarists Logan Thayer and Röbby Creasey shred and rock out on stage like nothing I’ve ever seen. Along with skilled bassist Charlee Conley, they play until their fingers bleed, all for their passion! In all the chaos, drummer Chad Kowal manages to keep the beat and sing backup vocals with an amazing voice. The cherry on top is frontman Ryan Howell wowing a crowd with his incomparable and untouchable voice. Putting these five together creates a powerhouse of talent that reels in extremely loving and devoted fans.

It all goes past the music though. Both during the show and afterwards, they make efforts to meet and interact with all their fans. As someone who has only briefly spoken to the band a few times on social media, I was amazed they recognized my face. After having full conversations with them and watching them interact with fans, they proved to me that amongst thousands of followers, they care about each and every one.

That is what you call good, wholesome people! If only all bands could learn that passion for the music and fans goes a long way. Farewell, My Love, along with Jamie’s Elsewhere, lionfight, and Incredible Me’ certainly know this! If you’d like to support wholehearted, dedicated people, and watch a fantastic rock show, I suggest catching these bands next time they hit your town!

Farewell, My Love

Farewell, My Love

Farewell, My Love is in the first week of their Rock and Rebel Tour and they have been lighting up the venues with their energetic sets. Just a couple months ago, we had told you about the awesome show that Farewell, My Love delivered on their stop into San Francisco for the We Own The Night Tour. This past Thursday, we were treated to the return of Farewell, My Love as they brought The Rock and Rebel Tour into Santa Rosa at the Live Musician’s Co-op.   We had a chance to talk with them before their set and are pleased to bring you that interview here. We missed Charlee, but were glad to have caught him at the end. Check it out here:

Here is a repost of our review of their Santa Rosa show in case you missed it:

The energy of the crowd was pretty good for a Thursday night and the band kicked into high hear as they took the stage. Farewell, My Love always give a 150% when they hit the stage. It was great to see many of the familiar faces in the crowd. One thing is for sure, they have very dedicated fans and when they are playing, they always make sure to make it out to the shows, no matter how far away it is! So we saw some fans from San Francisco, a couple who were at the Bakersfield and some who were going on to Sacramento!

Chad Kowal on drums blasts away on his double bass and delivers a fierce dose of drumming all while engaging the crowd with his dark mystique. Adding to the rhythm perfection is Charlee Conley laying down dynamic basslines through his passionate playing and robust energy. You are treated to two amazing guitarists, Robby Creasey and Logan Thayer on each side of the stage. Your eyes darting from one to the other as they deliver their precision guitar work amidst their charismatic and theatric stage presence. Ryan Howell is powerful and intense on his vocals and brings to life each song as he performs them. Each one of these five talented musicians have magnetic personalities and spellbinding stage presences that takes the audience member to a heightened sense of bliss.

The music of Farewell, My Love is definitely emotionally driven and truly connects to the listener. It comes as no surprise, to have heard from fans who explain how listening to their music has helped them or inspired them, or simply provide a sense of relief and retreat from whatever struggles or problems they were facing.

The Rock and Rebel Tour continues on until August and includes many dates across the US. I hope you make every effort to get yourself to a show. These guys deliver an energetic kick ass set every time.  Check out the photos by Rockin Ryan of their set in Santa Rosa:

We will be catching up with the guys when they come back to California in August at the Chain Reaction and we look forward to more tours. We will bring you more photos and promise to get a tour update from them. If you don’t already have Gold Tattoos… What have you been waiting for? Farewell My Love are just a couple days away from wrapping up their We Own The Night Tour and we caught them as they made there stop in San Francisco.  We have been wanting to see them live for a while now, but the timing and location never did line up until this week. They came to perform at the “Above DNA” stage at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco.  One thing is for sure, they definitely did live up to our expectations, they put on an awesome set!  The stage setup at the Above DNA is very small and space is limited, but that did not stop these five from delivering a 100% energy filled performance.

Farewell, My Love  have the complete package, the kick ass rocker look, charismatic personalities and are damn fine musicians that deliver KILLER ROCK n ROLL! There is no lack of adrenaline flowing through these guys and they bring life and energy to their stage performance.  They put the attention to detail and make sure to give the audience a full rock and roll show which is something lacking from a lot of bands these days. They have an amazingly dedicated fan base that sing along to the songs and know every word! You can’t help but have a good time at a Farewell, My Love concert.
