We are getting closer and closer to that special time of year…. NO, not the holidays! I am talking about the annual Winter NAMM Convention, otherwise known as the Disneyland for musicians.  Music Junkie Press will be covering the convention and we look forward to bringing you live coverage of new products, artist appearances, music news as well as coverage of the TEC Awards show.

This year will be the 30th NAMM TEC Awards and it will be an amazing one. Legendary musician /songwriter/guitarist, SLASH will be honored with the Les Paul Award. “The Les Paul Award named for the revolutionary inventor and esteemed musician, honors individuals or institutions that have set the highest standards of excellence in the creative application of audio and music technology. Instituted in 1991, the honor has been granted to luminaries including Pete Townshend, Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Todd Rundgren, and Peter Gabriel.”

SLASH has not only achieved success with album sales over 100 million copies, won a Grammy Award, seven nominations and we can’t forget the recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. His infamous solos from Guns n Roses songs were the inspiration to many young guitar players as they aspired to be as great a guitarist. His work in Velvet Revolver brought on a whole new group of fans and then his solo work with Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, has once again brought him to the forefront of rock n roll. Most recently, with his recent release of World On Fire he has truly set the world on fire with and grabbed everyone’s attention. Check out coverage of their recent performance at the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco here.

The TEC Awards will also feature comedian Sinbad as the host and the event will be held on Saturday, January 24th and we will make sure to bring you a recap of the night.

Thursday night be tackled the dense notorious Bay Area traffic to make it down just in time for The Gospel Tour concert at San Jose State University. Panic! at the Disco headlining tour featuring support by Walk the Moon and Youngblood Hawke was one we were not going to miss.

Panic! at the Disco had an amazing stage set up with probably one of the best light shows I have seen in a long time. It is great to see a band that places an importance on the set, lights, backing led screen. The members were strategically spread out across the stage and yet they didn’t feel isolated or separated.  Vocalist, Brendon Urie, whom earlier this year won for Best Vocalist at the APMA awards proved once again that he is well deserving of the award.
His powerful vocals, charming swagger and personality just shine through each song. He has great stage presence and intense energy that lit up the stadium. The guitarists would sprint across the stage and make sure that they would treat each side to their performance. Dallon on bass would run around and had this never ending energy, he was great at capturing the crowd’s attention. Check out the photos by Rockin Ryan of their set:

One of my favorite vocalists, Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco performed a couple covers of Frank Sinatra songs at tonight’s APMA Awards in Cleveland, Ohio.  First off, if you don’t already know by now, I am am MAJOR Frank Sinatra fan and very particular when it comes to Frank Sinatra covers. But tonight Brendon Urie gets my big stamp of approval on his covers of not only one but two songs!! Also Brendon did win the Alternative Press Award for Best Vocalist during the show.

With some help from the  Contemporary Youth Orchestra, Brendon perfomred  “Luck Be A Lady” and “Fly Me To The Moon.”  This isn’t the first time Brendon covers Frank. Brendon has mentioned before how Frank Sinatra was the ultimate music inspiration to him. I love he sings Frank everyday in the shower. I don’t think a day goes by that I don’t listen to some Frank.  Check out the video of his performance earlier tonight at the APMAs.

Here is another video of him singing Frank Sinatra’s  I’ve Got The World on a String.

Tyson

Congratulations are in order for the amazingly talented Tyson Leslie. Last month we brought you our review of his first solo album, Train Wrecks, Havoc and Heartbreak. You can read more about that here. Well this past Friday, Tyson was bestowed with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Project Backstage as part of the 4th annual Midwest Music Awards ceremony.

What an absolute honor and evening of surreality!” exclaimed Leslie. “It’s been one incredible weekend being among so many outstanding musical peers all in one place.  The awards show was unlike anything I’d ever performed, and I was proud, but greatly humbled as well to be a part of something so extraordinary!”  Tyson started making a name for himself in the Midwest when he was just a teenager. He began playing guitar in local metal bands, then playing keyboard for another act and moved on to various other instruments. The multi-talented Tyson soon became the go to musician in the Midwest.

Music is pretty well all I’ve known and all I’ve done with the majority of my life, relates Tyson, who has gone to be a sideman role for the likes of Corey Taylor (Stone Sour), George Lynch (Dokken / Lynch Mob) and Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big / Racer X), amongst others. I have zero limitations when it comes to genre exploration.  Hell, I’ll even play a polka if you ask me to.  There’s something to be found in every style out there.  There’s always something to love if you dig deep enough.”

Make sure to check out his power pop rock album, Train Wrecks, Havoc and Heartbreak  as you are treated to fun upbeat tracks, catchy choruses, power ballads and anything to fit your mood. Tyson comments about his solo album as, I love my metal and some R&B and funk, but when it comes to writing my own songs, this is where it’s at for me,” he says. “I love a good pop rock song and hopefully people think that I have about fourteen of those on this album.”

You can also visit his social media sites so you can stay up to date on his latest news and drop in and congratulate him on his Lifetime Achievement Award!
