We brought you our coverage of Asking Alexandria as they made a stop in San Francisco for The Moving On Tour. Now, we can’t wait to tell you about the opening band out on the tour, The Family Ruin. We have been featuring this amazing rock band from the UK all year long. We brought you our review of their kick ass album, Dearly Departed which was released in September and we couldn’t wait to finally catch them perform live.

One thing is for sure, they delivered an amazing kick ass set at the Regency Ballroom. I love it when a band that I really enjoy listening to can match the same intensity of their music as they do live on stage. This is one band that definitely has no problem conquering that battle. They blew me away and had me eagerly wanting to see them again soon! Check out more photos of their set by our Rockin Ryan:

From the moment they hit the stage and until they walked off to greet fans at their merch booth, they captivated the crowd with their high energy rock. To get to see them perform live my favorites from their album like Let’s Go, Let It Burn, and Bring Out Your Dead. The crowd quickly fell in love with them and you know that many concert goers left with The Family Ruin being their new favorite band!

Check the dates below and see if you will be able to catch The Family Ruin out on tour:

We were glad we braved the 4 hour traffic filled trek to Sacramento last night to catch the Monster Energy Outbreak Rock Tour. After sitting in traffic for so long, it was great to arrive at the Ace of Spades for a night of heavy music to release all that pent up frustration! The night started right off with a fierce set by Sworn In from Chicago. Holy shit, these guys blew us away!

This was the first time I heard of Sworn In and after just a few minutes of hitting the stage, I was converted from a newbie to an absolute die-hard lover. I am bummed that it has taken me so long to find out about this band, but I am now grateful. They have a ferociously heavy sound that brought the crowd to peak levels within minutes of starting.  I am not going to do them the injustice of trying to describe them as a certain genre or sub-genre, they are just pure energy heavy rock with metal influences that you have to hear. Hands down, one of the best sets from an opening band that I have seen in a long time.  With songs like Snake Eyes and Dead Soul, they are going to be your new Go To band on your playlist.

Check out the photos from our Rockin Ryan of their set:

There are still some dates left out on the tour, so make sure to get out and see them!

Going through concert announcements a few weeks ago, I spotted William Control playing in Munich. Unfortunately not a headliner tour, but some acts you just need to see live any opportunity you can get. It was William Control’s first time in Germany with this project. Last time was seven years ago with Aiden.

That evening he opened for Combichrist. As it is common in Munich and probably some others places too, the room’s not really crowded, when the opening act gets on stage. I couldn’t say how many people really heard of William Control before. If they’d known more about him, there definitely would’ve been more people at the beginning of his show.

DSC_0153

He started the set with ‘All due restraint’ from the 2010 released album ‘Noir’. Throughout the show he played songs from all his albums ‘Novus Ordo seclorum’, ‘Hate culture’ and ‘Neuromancer’. William was constantly moving around on stage, throwing and catching his mic or circling it around his neck. No standstill whatsoever. It’s fun to watch and the songs he chose invited the audience to sing along, which they even did at some point (not really loud, but I saw them singing) and believe me, the audience of this city is really hard to get that far, esp. when they’re just introduced to someone that night.  I’d have loved to hear much more, but you always meet twice in life, so there I’m hoping for a 2nd time. Hopefully in 2015! I missed the song ‘Illuminator’ that evening, in fact one of my fave songs of the current record ‘Neuromancer’. All in due time I guess.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

William was at the merch table after the show to talk to fans, autograph stuff and take pictures. Chances to meet bands after the shows are rare these days, so it was really nice he took some time to hang out.

European tour ends December 20th after an almost two-month period.

Set-list:

  • All due restraint
  • Beautiful Loser
  • Strangers
  • Price we pay
  • New world order
  • Revelator
  • Razors Edge
  • I’m only human sometimes

9Electric is:

  • Thunderwood – Vocals
  • *Mikey Lopez* – Guitar
  • CaseyDC – Bass
  • Micah Electric – Drums/Programming

Check out a video that Rockin Ryan created with live footage of their set to their song, Filthy:

These four guys have the energy of an army packed in them and are determined to get the crowd on their feet and having a good time which isn’t too hard because their music is absolutely infectious and you can’t stand still. Thunderwood has quite a stage presence that he doesn’t limit to just the stage, as he takes himself as he walks on the bar counters and even propels himself onto the crowd and took his crowd surfing skills to the back of the house insuring everyone was as energized as themselves. Another highlight of their set was when they performed a hellacious cover of AC/DC’s Dirty Deeds. 2014 is definitely the year for The Relapse Symphony! They not only put out what I believe is one of the top albums of the year, did some extensive non-stop touring but now are going to be releasing what could be another top album! They are going to be releasing an acoustic version of their album, Shadows titled Shadows The Acoustic Sessions.  The LP is set for release on December 16th through Standby Records and they have just launched the pre-order. Head over to http://standbyrecords.net/ and get your order in. Make sure to pick up extra copies so you can give them to your friends for the holidays!

I listened to the album and I have to tell you….. WOW, It is just as amazing as their original and with the acoustic atmosphere, it brings to life so much emotion. Bret’s vocals are spot on spectacular and the backing vocals from the band is superb. Unbelievable and what a great group of talented young musicians. I can’t wait for you to hear it, so get your orders in!

jc 1

Guitarist J.C. Charles says, “After releasing SHADOWS in July and touring it all Summer, we really began to appreciate the songs in a raw, live setting. We wanted to challenge ourselves to strip the album down completely and go in and do the whole thing acoustic. We are so used to recording in fancy studios with producers and a lot of complicated arrangements, and it felt good to do away with all of that and just do these songs live and acoustic. This acoustic album feels like a good transition from SHADOWS to our next record, which is sure to be much less produced and more raw and aggressive.

I will leave you with a couple of their videos,  “One More Yesterday” & “Savage Eyes” These are easily two of our favorite songs from the album Shadows. The video for Savage Eyes has a mysterious old time horror film vibe, which really fits the song well. One More Yesterday delivers a cinematic portrayal of a funeral for Bret and was inspired by J.C.’s concept. It includes cameo appearances from members of Burn Halo, Dead Rabbitts and more.  Check them both out below

“One More Yesterday” :

“Savage Eyes” :

If you don’t already have it, make sure to also pick up the original album, Shadows on  iTunes here.  Make sure to check our full album review here. Need more of The Relapse Symphony? Check out the photos from their set in San Francisco on the Shapeshiftour.

Make sure to visit their social media sites and stay up to date on their latest news and tour updates. I will leave you with an interview we did when The Relapse Symphony made there stop in San Francisco for the Shapeshiftour.

Arriving a bit later than usual (it was about 30 minutes before show start) most people were already inside. The crowd was pretty mixed age-wise, the average definitely older than 30 I’d say, which in my opinion resides in the main act Lacuna Coil being around for quite some time in the music business and having a fan-base that started to build a while back.

8pm was show start. There’s really not much to say about the first opener Devilment. The music itself wasn’t that bad, but you have to be into the kind of singing their vocalist Dani Filth does which is high pitched screams or low voiced growling. The crowd waited for what was about to come.

Next on were Motionless In White. They already had a fan base and I’m pretty sure they gained some new ones that night. It was a very energetic set. They started out with the first single of their recent, same-titled album, ‘Reincarnate’. Their 10 song set-list consisted of songs like ‘Abigail’, ‘Break the cycle’, ‘Generation lost’ and ‘Puppets 3’, also a song from ‘Reincarnate’ on which Dani Filth does guest vocals on the record.

It was awesome to watch vocalist Chris Motionless interact with the crowd, running around on stage and climbing monitor stacks. One time he suddenly ‘disappeared’ from the stage to stand in the middle of a small gangway under the roof of the club, singing to the audience and encouraging them to clap and sing along, hugging his girlfriend quickly, only to head straight back to the stage like a whirlwind. During the set you felt the people getting closer to the stage with every song, so even the ones that were mainly there for Lacuna Coil enjoyed their music and just adopted the joy that the band obviously had in performing. They finished their set with ‘Devils Night’. I really didn’t know what to expect, but I was absolutely blown away by how awesome the songs sound live and by the performance of the band. Hopefully they’ll come back soon on a headline tour! Many bands that come to Germany as openers, return sooner or later to play as headliners, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed for a tour in 2015!!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Right after their set, the greater part of the first two rows left. They were only there to see Motionless In White, which makes me all the more confident in hoping for an imminent return! As I wrote earlier, the average age was beyond 30, the greater part of the under 20’s left the club at that point.

Lacuna Coil started their set at around 10 pm. Most of the people knew every lyric to the songs they played. They also did a cover of ‘Enjoy the silence’ by Depeche Mode, encouraging everyone to sing along. It was a 60 minutes set. A bit short and considering peoples talks everyone hoped for a longer show, but nonetheless the atmosphere was great and everyone had a blast!

STARKILL from Chicago recently opened for Arch Enemy earlier this week as the tour made a stop in San Francisco. The night was perfect and included awesome sets by Huntress and Kreator. Starkill opened the night with pure adrenaline as they hit the stage. These guys came out and gave 150% and left it all out on that stage. They got the crowd fired up as they played songs from their recently released album,  Virus Of The Mind out on Century Media Records. Check out the photos from our Rockin Ryan of their set:

STARKILL is:

  • Parker Jameson: lead guitar, vocals, keyboards
  • Spencer Weidner: drums
  • Tony Keathley: guitar, backing vocals
  • Shaun Andruchuk: bass guitar

The band recently launched a video for the lead track “Before Hope Fades” as well as a lyric video for the title track, “Virus Of The Mind.”  Check  them both out here:

Make sure to pick up your copy of Virus of The Mind and crank it up loud enough for your neighbors to hear. They will thank you for you introducing them to some bad ass new metal!

Tickets will go on sale this Friday so don’t miss out and get your tickets early! I promise you that it will be a show you will never forget. The Black Veil Brides Black Mass Tour made a stop in San Francisco earlier this month. In case you missed it, check out our coverage of the spectacular night!

After opening sets by Set It Off, Drama Club and Falling In Reverse, the night was topped off with a stunning set by Black Veil Brides. They took to the stage and started right with the first single, Heart of Fire off their recently released self titled album. The energy that these five young men bring out is non stop and truly remains unmatched. The set was filled with a variety of old and new songs, even performing Coffin for the first time in San Francisco. The light show was stunning and the sound was crisp and spot on. If you listen to people talk about the rock scene being dead or the music industry is dying out, when you come to a BVB show, you will see the living and breathing proof that Rock will never die! I loved seeing the crowd which included fans as young as 6 years old and as seasoned rockers well into their senior years, singing along to every word. The music of Black Veil Brides does not limit itself to one genre, age, or lifestyle. It is simply pure rock and roll at its finest and that is why the attraction to them is insurmountable. You can’t help but love their music and even more so, the message they bring to the fans about staying true to who you, follow your dreams and stand up and be proud. Each generation brings those bands that will stand the test of time, Beatles, The Who, Rolling Stones, Kiss, Van Halen, Motley Crue, just to name a few, and now without a doubt; Black Veil Brides rightfully carries their place on the list.

Stay tuned as we will be bringing you full photo galleries of each set.  If The Black Mass 2014 Tour is coming to a venue even remotely near you, I would strongly urge you to make it to one of the shows. You will find yourself at what I think is the Best Tour of 2014!

trunnell happy polkadot

Mallory Trunnell knows  how to party and she threw an heck of one at the Hotel Café Sunday night to release her new album,  Words.  Dramatic in a puffy pink prom dress with a blue silk sash marvelously clashing with her red hair,  brilliant red  lipstick and plastic flower necklace, Mallory was dressed for the part…part music, part fun,  part party.  She started the party with a parade of singing a Capella girls, who wound their way through the audience to stand in front of the stage adding a backup of ooh-ohh –oho and bong, bong, bong” to “Mallory’s  opening number from the new album, “My Turn”.  It was smiles from there.

But despite the celebratory atmosphere, Mallory Trunnell is not a party girl; she is a busy girl, and has been from an early age.  She grew up in Delta Utah and began an acting career at the age of 4 and started writing songs at 9, pretty sizeable accomplishments for a child in a desert town of about 3500 people. She is now  in LA and is thriving in this city of 3 and half  million, at least 10,000 of whom are  aspiring musicians.  Currently on her plate is  promoting  the new album released at  Sunday nights party, The Twilight Music Girls band based on the Twilight book series, an earlier band called The crimson Calamity with Lauren Harding,  a “Walk Through Music” video to help support the Take the Walk charity,  the Hot Topic West Coast Tour  and other gigs including the House of Blues earlier this month.

She brings that busy energy to her performances.  She fills the room with energy as well as music.  Far more than a singer/songwriter, Trunnell is a force of nature on stage, directing the a Capella chorus, the two Bob Bop Girls backup (and sometimes foreground) singers, and her band or playing solo piano –  while all the time keeping us laughing, toe-tapping and occasionally singing along.

The a Capella chorus sauntered back into the audience as Trunnell began the title song from the album, “Words”, happily singing the not so happy words with a big smile:  I’ve been restless and feeling desperate/When I could barely breathe. This is Trunnell’s signature, happy, upbeat melodies with not so happy lyrics. Listen the words.

She continued the upbeat music/downbeat lyrics with “Happy”, starting with a devil-may-care Da da da da da da dum/Da da da da da doo doo doot n doo doo doot,n do yeah and follows it by asking the very sincere why does it hurt her to hate her lover  when it doesn’t hurt her lover to hate her – all  joyfully accented by the Bob Bop Girls whose ooo’s and bob, bop’s make you grin while you wonder at the lyrics.

SAMSUNG CSC

She lowers the energy but ups the emotion with the querulous “Waiting”,  asking plaintively I am. You Are. Can We be?  and then really lowers it with “Tattooed”, a slowed-walked urgent conversation with a lover. She laments the Tattoos so deep /They sink to my bones….I scrub and scrub/and scrub and scrub and scrub…But your colors have tattooed me.  Her voice is urgent, her soul is stricken and she leaves us thinking how can this vivacious redhead with a silly grin in a 50’s prom dress with a guitar slung awkwardly across her chest make us feel so deeply that our stomachs tighten.

A consummate performer, Trunnell understands emotional breaks and emotional momentum – and when to do both.  She gives us the break by moving to the piano and shooing the band off the sage, lightening the atmosphere. Then, she announces it’s story time and  tells about the woman who set her on the path to music , her grandmother Ruby, the subject of the next song. The simple piano with her personal, talk-directly-to-you  singing made this a high point of the evening.  We laughed before; now we cried. Then we clapped when she gave a shout out to her mom, sitting at a table with friends enjoying her daughter’s talent and love.

But it was time to return to upbeat /downbeat as she stepped back to the microphone and brought the band onstage for “Quit You”, another  paean to an addictive bad-for-you relationship. No,no,no I cannot quit you ….Since you’ve been gone/There’s been a little too much room/ in my bed.  Most singer/songwriters mine their own  lives for material;  if Trunnell’s lyrics come from her life, her memoir will be delicious.

Trunnell finished with a flourish, singing “Tomorrow’s Coming Fast”,  telling the very substantial Sunday night 7 pm early crowd  I’ve got paper/Got words to rhyme/I’ve got music.

Music is exactly what she has and when she shares it she makes people very, very happy.

Patrick O’Heffernan. Host, Music FridayLive!

We recently brought you our recap of the Black Veil Brides Black Mass Tour as it made a stop in San Francisco at the legendary Warfield Theater. You can read more about the whole night here. We know that if you are like us, you are addicted to Falling In Reverse and you need more of a fix, so here you go.

Falling In Reverse did it again as they always do….. Put on a great show and they seem to push the bar higher each time, and easily meeting it. Ronnie shined with his over the top spectacular stage presence. Without a doubt, he is the Champion of the stage! One of the reasons that Falling in Reverse is so damn fun is because of Mr. Ronnie Radke, who is a true entertainer in all aspects. There is no denying it. This is one guy who really proves that no matter how people try to bring him down, he always rises above it and comes back even twice as strong.  He literally makes sure that everyone in that venue is having the time of their life, singing along and having fun. And on this night at The Warfield, that is exactly what happened. It was wild to hear what was nearly the entire audience singing along to all the songs in the set! If we had an award to give out this year, it would be for Frontman of the Year and it would deservedly go to Mr. Ronnie Radke.

IMG_0782

Their set had a cool backdrop with the middle fingers in the air adorning  two basketball hoops which went great with their Falling In Reverse team uniforms. They involved the audience as they attempted to make shots into the baskets and no worries when they missed, since they were then given t-shirts. It was an all around fun night and you had only hoped for more music from them.  They even ended their set by playing The Drug In Me is You, not only once…. but twice which brought the excitement of the crowd to paramount levels.

Jacky Vincent was a madman on his purple custom Dean and he whipped out his sweet solos without missing a note. He was jumping around the stage and feeding the audience with his abundant energy.  You would then look to the right and catch Derek Jones on guitar and J. Wolf on bass treating the crowd to their own stage antics. I loved Ryan as he was breaking in his new Truth Drum kit. He is fierce on backing vocals and drums and yet, makes it look so easy as he always has an infectious smile on his face.  Everyone in the venue including these musicians were having an awesome time. Check out a slideshow of photos from their set:
