Ed Kowalczyk, the legendary songwriter and former lead-singer of the multi-platinum rock band LIVE, announces the first leg of his Throwing Copper Unplugged – 20th Anniversary Tour. I can only imagine the atmosphere that the stripped down, acoustic versions will bring to the intimate settings as Ed Kowalczyk will perform some of rock’s most profound anthems. His signature vocals has attracted legions of fans for more than two decades. For complete tour and ticketing details, visit: www.edkowalczyk.com

I still remember the first time I heard the amazing voice of Ed, it was back in the ’91/’92 and as usual, I went out in search of live bands on a Friday night.  My group of friends and I went to the Paradise Lounge and the DNA Lounge in San Francisco and LIVE was just about to perform there. I remember getting up and going right to the front of the stage and watching the entire set in awe of that amazing voice. Ed’s voice is powerful yet vulnerable, commanding yet inviting, just pure blissful. This is one tour that I strongly encourage you to see.

The first leg of the tour includes the following locations:

  • Wed-Feb-04 The Center for the Arts Natick, MA
  • Thu-Feb-05 Narrows Center for the Arts Fall River, MA
  • Fri-Feb-06 Flying Monkey Perf. Center Plymouth, NH

empires

Empires was one of our featured bands for Bottle Rock Festival and they did an awesome job and were one of the festival highlights. Empires have announced their major label debut Orphan, out September 23rd on Chop Shop/Island Records. Produced by John Congleton (St. Vincent, The Black Angels, Explosions in the Sky), Orphan is a collection of songs immersed in classic post punk and indie rock n’ roll circa 1989-1991, exploring the sonic adventures and emotional heft of artists such as Roxy Music, Wire, and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Check out their track, Please Don’t Tell My Lover here:

From the first time I listened to Empires, I was taken back to the nightlife of the ’90s as I would go club hopping and enjoy grunge, alternative, and mod.  It was a time for you to feel the music and literally have it take over you. Empires are an Indie Alternative band from Chicago that do just that. You can’t help but listen to them and be “in the moment”. Fantastic songwriting, blended with grunge vibes, alternative style, and stirring vocals make this band have the winning combination.

empre

The band is currently on the road with Chain Gaing of 1974, are looking forward to playing this year’s Austin City Limits and plan to spend all of 2014/15 on the road. Pre-orders will be available starting August 19th. Make sure to visit their social media sites and stay up to date on their latest news.

Earlier this year, we had the opportunity to catch Weezer when they performed at Bottle Rock Napa 2014  and they truly took over Day 2! One thing is for sure, Weezer knows how to insure everyone is having a good time. They put on a set filled with fan favorites and the crowd was singing along and dancing. The crowd was filled; from the stage all the way back to the vendor booths. Even in the blistering heat, people couldn’t help but dance around as if at one big party! Definitely a big highlight for me at this year’s Bottle Rock.

The Deadlies

We had listed SmashMouth as one of our featured bands of the Day for Bottle Rock last month and they were awesome last Saturday. We were running around like crazy but we were glad we could make it out to the Miner Stage to catch a few of their songs from their set. It was packed from front to back, side to side. They were truly there to give the fans what they wanted; an absolutely fun time filled with their favorite songs.

This band does not need any introduction as almost all of us at one time or another cranked up “All Star” and sang out loud at the top of our lungs. I have always had a love affair with SmashMouth since they bring out the fun side in me and capture the perfect essence of summer! You can’t help but listen to their music loud and dance along as their music has always been the life of the party!  “When we play itʼs a nonstop party,” Steve Harwell, lead singer says. That is so true and I hope you all come out to enjoy SmashMouth and their non stop party at this year’s Bottle Rock Napa Festival. Check out a few of Rockin Ryan’s photos from their set here:

SmashMouth started back in 1994 in San Jose and this year is the 20 year Anniversary for them.  They have hits that were and still are everyone’s favorites such as Walkinʼ on the Sun and All Star,Then the Morning Comes, Canʼt Get Enough Of You Baby, and a cover of The Monkees classic Iʼm a Believer. You can’t forget how great it was to hear their Monkees cover  on the Shrek soundtrack (#4, Billboard Adult Top 40). Collectively, the band Smash Mouth has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide and there is no letting up in sight for these musicians as they continue to keep the party alive. Here is our quick band feature:

Band Members:

  • Steve Harwell- Lead Singer
  • Paul DeLisle- Bass

If you missed their performance at this year’s Bottle Rock you can also catch them out on tour this summer with Uncle Kracker, Sugar Ray and Blues Travelers. Also, they will be performing on June 13th at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. That will definitely be one fun beach party night and I hope you make it out there!

The Deadlies were one of our Bottle Rock Napa Featured Bands and we were able to catch their set this past Saturday. One thing is for sure, they truly brought the fun to the festival. Their stage was set up like a surf party complete with beach go-go dancers. The City Winery Local Stage was one of the most happenin spots when The Deadlies took to the stage. This is a local band with a big sound!

As we told you before in our preshow coverage, you may have already seen or heard them play but we were not familiar with them. The Deadlies can be described as a California surf punk/rock band with a little Honky Tonk and Country thrown in.  One thing is for sure, when you listen to The Deadlies, you can’t help but move around and have some fun! They are “paying homage to the Ventures Dick Dale and the Chantays as well as the California Honky-tonk sound of Buck Owens and Dwight Yoakam while keeping an under lying presence of the California surf punk scene that brought us the Dickies, Agent Orange and Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs.”

The Deadlies are the “Cave Band” on “Creepy KOFY Movietime”, the “house band” at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo and their music has been featured on Live 105, 107.7FM the Bone (San Francisco), 99.3FM KVYN (Napa) and 810AM KGO (San Francisco). For the past three months we have been bringing to you our featured artists and bands for the 2014 Bottle Rock Napa Festival. The festival was a great success, very well organized, plenty of parking, shuttles, food vendors, water refilling and phone charging stations. We will continue to bring you our recap of this successful festival but first we wanted to bring you the Highlight of the 2014 Bottle Rock Napa Festival. I don’t think it comes as any surprise, that The Cure has been chosen as the highlight of this year’s festival.

The Cure played on Friday night and after a long day of great bands, good food and lots of fun. They started promptly at 7:30 and treated us to a nonstop 2 1/2 hour set. When I mean nonstop, I mean literally nonstop. There were no show breaks, or small talk. They were there to perform and did everything to insure that we all heard our personal favorites as well as some songs that haven’t played live in years!  Due to the strict sound ordinance, they had to have the sound turned off promptly at 10:00. I have no doubt that they could have gone on for another 2 hours.

The energy was intense and infectious as the crowd which ranged from youngsters, teens, young adults to seniors. Everyone was there to have a good time and to witness the magic of a Cure concert. I had the pleasure of seeing The Cure a couple times back in the 90’s and this concert was every bit as magical as those times. Robert Smith sounded just as sweet and captivating as he always did. The band was spot on and delivered studio quality sound. This was a full on rock show and kudos to all the hard working crew that made it happen. When I looked around the crowd, I saw a woman crying, she was in complete joy of the surreal moment. She and her friends were enjoying the moment as they exclaimed numerous times, how they couldn’t believe they were there to see The Cure!

That was the atmosphere all around, everyone was fueled with adrenaline, the crowd was filled and the night brought nostalgic moments to some, new memories to others but to all a wonderful time. You can check out our slide show of photographs from the night.

No Age

Today our Bottle Rock Napa Featured Band is No AgeNo Age is the duo of Dean Spunt and Randy Randall. Together they bring a fun side to music with vibrant energy and well written tracks. Their music can be described as anywhere between skater or surf punk, fuzz rock, pop punk,or  shoe gaze.  They set out with one particular rule in mind:” To write songs that we would be psyched to listen to”.Their songs are full of high energy, catchy melodies and create the perfect attitude, whether it be full of angst or rebellion or mood setting stabilizer.

They currently have their new record An Object out on Sub Pop Records. Their songs take upon a life of their own and you can feel their influences rise to the top in each song. Whether you are capturing a punk vibe or the swirling guitars, you are captivated by the sound as it emotionally draws you in. There is something so ethereal about the vocals as they transcend the levels from shoe gaze to heavier strides. Their new album An Object was perfect proof all of their hard work as they performed, recorded, produced, and prepared and assembled the entirety of the physical packaging of it. With this attention to detail, you are able to really appreciate the passion that these two have in their music. I look forward to their performance at this year’s Bottle Rock Napa Festival.   Here is our quick band feature:
