BullyWest, an indie rock band from Oakland may have had to weather a few bumps in the road, but these determined rockers prove that nothing can stand in their way and their need to ROCK! With a sound that blends grunge/rock/alternative/blues/americana and classic rock into their own unique style, they will truly capture your attention. We had the chance to see BullyWest perform at The Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, last Saturday night and they blew us a way. I was bummed to have not heard of them before because it would have insured Music Junkie Press’ presence at their performances!

The band has had to endure through the recent challenge of having thousands of dollars of their gear stolen at a recent show. This in no way, will stop them from forging ahead. Their fans and friends quickly stepped up with support and they held a benefit concert with Iron Heart, Six Gun Saints and other bands performing at Red Hat. They raised some money but still have an upward climb to replace their gear. They have created a GoFundMe campaign and you can check it out here and see how you can help:  We had the opportunity to talk with members of the band after their bad ass set at the Phoenix and are pleased to share that with you here:

Their set was really spectacular and had me already thinking about their next show. Manny on guitar and vocals is really mesmerizing, he has a soulful voice that brings back flashbacks of early Chris Cornell. He brings out this great emotion through his songs. Shane on bass is a madman and has a great stage presence, he lays down his bass lines as he is bouncing around his area. Bernt on drums delivered a solid heavy set and you can feel his energy. These guys are great and I can’t wait to catch them again. Check out the photos by our Rockin Ryan of their set:

Mustered Courage is a four piece modern bluegrass band from Melbourne, Australia. They might have the fundamentals of bluegrass, but they have definitely given the genre a facelift with their unique style and sound. Dubbed newgrass, they have brought an alternative edge to the bluegrass scene and have been energizing crowds across the country with their big harmonies and sweet pickings. It would be too limiting to categorize this band as bluegrass because their modern sound blends in everything form country, alternative, and rock. There is something for everyone to enjoy and connect with.

Band Members:

  • Nick Keeling: Vocals/Banjo
  • Julian Abrahams: Vocals/ Guitar
  • Josh Bridges: Vocals/ Bass
  • Paddy Montgomery: Mandolin/Vocals

Mustered Courage have recently released their sophomore album, Powerlines and whether you are a bluegrass aficionado or searching for that new music to add to your playlist, this is the album for you. The songs will take you on a musical journey and it starts right off with the energetic upbeat track of Standing By Your Side. You will find yourself immediately toe tapping as a smile comes across your face as you are excited for this new album.

Album Cover

Cruel Alibis is an amazing song with emotionally driven lyrics that starts off with a sweet serenade style and then picks up to the addition of the picking that has a voice of its own, creating emotions with each note.

Behind the Bullet has a nice country intro and the powerful vocals are really highlighted as they create a Southern style swagger. It has a dynamic string picking solo that gets you fully charged as the rhythm is gliding through your body. Another great song is the track Rosa featuring Kasey Chambers and her voice brings a great warm welcoming tone to the storytelling tale. The heartwarming song, My Hometown swirls a nostalgic air as it has you longing for a return to home, the place where your heart truly lies.

Allegheny takes it up a notch and gets you fully charged with the fierce string picking intro. Once again the strings take on their own emotion and voice which I find captivating. It really will have you in awe on this track as you revel in the precision and meticulous craft of their musicianship.

Towin the Chain is the highlight of the vocals of this band as they deliver a soul touching tale a-capella style that is powerful and impressive. The harmonies just grab a hold of you. Southern Style is just like it sounds a true ode to southern style and you can feel the charm come to life in this song.

The title track Powerlines is sure to stand out and it has a very alternative edge to it. The song brings to the forefront, the versatility of this band and it could easily be the track that draws non-bluegrass listeners into the wonderful world of Mustered Courage. It  has an Americana folk feel as the vocals and lyrics wrap around you to make that emotional connection.

Go To Hell has a high energy beat track and you can’t help but feel charged. Its rhythm enters you and is like a rush of adrenaline to your soul. The strings are spectacular on this track and will have you in admiration of their picking. The vocals have a great rough rawness that is the perfect edge to this song.

Miss My Ways is another one of my favorite tracks as the vocals bring depth to the well written lyrics that are emotionally driven and soulful. It has a catchy chorus that blends so well with the strings.  Old Steam Train has a big country sound with a honkytonk vibe. When you listen to it, you can almost picture yourself rockin on the front porch as you reminisce about train adventures of the past, thirsting for a new ride.

The final track Still Shinin is the perfect finale to this album. It has true fusion of traditional bluegrass with modern flair. It might be the last song on the album but it has a mighty large sound. Just enough to have you press replay on the album and start your love affair with Mustered Courage all over again.

You can pick up the album on iTunes, Amazon, or the physical copy through Make sure to also visit their social media sites and stay up to date on their latest news. Mustered Courage are currently on tour in the US so visit their Tour Page and make sure to get yourself to a show. I think they have a couple Northern California performance so we will see if we can bring you some coverage or an interview.

Last night we ventured out to the new music venue at Sonoma Mountain Village for the inaugural concert which featured Goo Goo Dolls. It was an awesome night. Check out coverage of the Goo Goo Dolls here:  Goo Goo Dolls at Sonoma Mountain Village

Let me tell you about the opening band. The Goo Goo Dolls are currently out on tour with Daughtry and the Plain White T’s. This show was off of their regular tour dates and we were unsure if there was going to be an opening band. We were excited when we saw another drum set on the stage giving us the assurance of an opening act. What I really love is seeing a completely new band with out knowing anything about them. I wish more people would get excited about warm up bands. You never know if you are about to find yourself a new favorite band. Well that happened last night for us.

The band happened to be a local band from Santa Rosa, Girls & Boys and they blew the crowd away. Their music is a blend of alternative, Americana Rock and sweet blues thrown in the mix for good measure. We loved them and the crowd did too. I am really looking forward to finding out more about this band and hoping to catch them at their next show.

Band Members:

  • Brianna Lee – Vocals, Guitar
  • Josh Barrett – Bass
  • Mark Tarlton – Drummer
  • Nick Simmons – Guitar

Brianna’s vocals were mesmerizing and she could take you from powerful song into a subtle gentleness, very versatile and truly has her own unique style. Mark was keeping the beat and was excellent at creating a powerful large sound which can be hard to do from an opening band’s kit. Nick shredded on his guitar and he would dish out these great blues licks that just got the crowd pumped. Josh, oh Josh, he was awesome and I have to say a true highlight. His energy on that bass was fierce and unstoppable, he has a great stage presence and is a cameraman’s dream. Collectively these four delighted the crowd and won over the entire audience. Check out a slideshow of photos from their set by our Rockin Ryan here:

Aug. 02 3 p.m. Hawkes Winery Healdsburg, CA

The Gallery, featuring Brendan Cooney (vocals), Ben Lozano (lead guitar), Dave Mozdzanowski (bass), and Ryan Cooney (drums), built a grassroots fan base through both word-of-mouth and relentless touring. By playing nearly 300 shows in more than 35 states, the foursome has shared their music on the road with fans across the US. The band has captivated packed crowds at such well-known venues as the House of Blues Sunset and the Troubadour in their current home base of Los Angeles, as well as the Iron Horse Music Hall andPearl Street in their former hometown in Western Massachusetts.

The Gallery‘s album Restless successfully alternates up-tempo rockers like “The Runaround” and “Fast Friends” with stunning lyrical ballads like “Ballroom of Broken Hearts” and “Restless Soul.” The band’s versatility allows them to combine elements of folk, country and rock-and-roll to create a raw, honest record with broad appeal. Existing fans will gravitate towards the catchy riffs that drive songs like “White Noise Town.” For newcomers, Restless is a great place to start. Check out one of our favorite songs, Fast Friends:

We will see if we can bring you coverage from their kick off date which is held here in San Francisco at the Bottom of The Hill. Make sure to visit their social media sites for more information.

In today’s age of music, a producer has to wear many hats and be able to not only oversee and manage an artist’s recording, but they have to be musicians themselves and delve completely into the project. The most important aspect of the producer is to take the artist’s vision and do everything possible to make that vision a reality through their music and recording.

We had the opportunity to talk an amazing producer, John Kendall Royston of Echodog Productions. Echodog Productions provide a full service creative and commercial audio production, mixing, songwriting, and voiceover services. John along with his partner Dan Mineart produced the new forthcoming album, Shadows by The Relapse Symphony. It is an amazing album that truly takes the young band to new levels within their music. Check out an interview with vocalist Bret Von Dehl here as we discussed his album.

John in addition to producing, is a multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter for his band Savage Bones along with his producing partner, Dan. Their music is filled with emotionally driven lyrics, heartfelt songs that will appeal to all your senses. Their music is a mixture of Americana wrapped in Alternative Country. It is refreshing and new, and with songs like Impossible Love or Wild and Free, you can’t help but feel a connection to their music. Do yourself a favor and make sure to check out Savage Bones.

Meanwhile, whether you are a musician in search of a producer, enjoy the inner workings of music, an aspiring producer, or just want to know more about music production, I would suggest you take the time out to check out our in-depth interview with John here:

It was great to talk with John and to really see the passion he has in producing as well as his own music. We look forward to seeing what John has in store for us in the future, whether it be his own music or through the records he producers. Echodog Productions is definitely making a great name for themselves.

Today our Bottle Rock Napa Featured Artist is Thom Chacon. For today I wanted to feature an artist who truly makes an impression with his words and melodies in his song. Thom Chacon is an Americana delight as his music brings to light his influences of Kris Kristofferson, Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt, among others. His love of nature in his personal life trickles into his song as you find yourself often painting a scenic picture in your head as you listen to him.  His narrative style evokes so much passion in his songs and his vocals are soul touching. One of the songs that highlights this style is in Chasing the Pain, amazing song that tells such a reflective story of pain.

Thom‘s songwriting is spectacular and reminds me of true Johnny Cash style. Thom has gone on to tour around the world, opening for artists as diverse as Los Lonely Boys and Jason Mraz, playing shows in Thailand and India, and even one memorable gig on July 4, 2004 at Folsom Prison, shortly after the death of another of his idols, Johnny Cash. “That was a life-changing experience for me,” he says.  One of my favorite songs is American Dream that tells the truthful side of living the American Dream. One of the best lines in the song is:

“I’m living the American dream

Fo’ sho’

I’m worth more dead Because baby, I owe.”

Doesn’t that capture the true meaning of the American Dream today.  Thom also recently wrote an amazing song “Before the Drilling Rigs Got Here” which he wrote for the families who have been adversely affected by hydraulic fracturing. We look forward to Thom‘s appearance at this year’s Bottle Rock Napa Festival.

Music:  Thom Chacon
