One of my favorite bands of my youth and then became the soundtrack of my life is The Church. The Church have announced the release date of what will become their 25th studio album release. The album, Further/Deeper, will be released in North America on February 3rd 2015.  2015 also marks the 35th anniversary of the band. 35 years of great music amid lineup changes, music formats and so much more. “The magic started on day one,” says singer/bass player Steve Kilbey. “Someone strummed a chord or struck a drum or plucked a note and we were off. We wrote and recorded like demons and it was inspiring to feel every member using all his resources in the service of this record.”

In addition to working on a tour in support of the new album, they have released a video for their song, Pride Before a Fall which is off the new album. Check it out here:

The song features that signature sound of The Church that I have loved and missed so much. I am really excited for the new album. Check out the track listing and cover here:

John Spinks

Rest In Peace

Songwriter and guitarist for The Outfield, John Spinks has passed away at age 60 from liver cancer. The British pop rock band, The Outfeild had eight Billboard 100  hits from 1986 – 1992 which includes of course it’s Number 6 big hit, Your Love which was written by John. Their debut album, Play Deep spent 66 weeks on the chart and went Platinum.

Oddly, The Outfield had great commercial success in the US much more than their homeland. I think I still have my Outfield cassettes. I wore them out and loved them. Their songs still bring me back to my youth as soon as I play them. I thank them for the great music which became the soundtrack of my youth.

We send our deepest condolences to John’s family and friends. The Outfield posted the following message on their Facebook page:

It is with great sadness to inform you that John passed away at 09.55 on Wednesday 9th July 2014. He was 60 years old. As many of you know, he had been suffering from liver cancer for many years and bravely fought the disease until the very end. We are relieved that his passing was peaceful and painless. John was a loving husband, inspirational father, doting grandfather and gifted songwriter. His musical career started from a very young age and he wanted more than anything for people to listen and enjoy his music. He passed away knowing he achieved his ambition. If it were possible, we know John would have liked to have thanked each and every fan of The Outfield personally. He admired and respected the emails from thousands of loyal followers who commented on his music and enquired about his health. This alone, gave him motivation to battle through the sometimes dark days.

We would like to thank you for ‘Your Love’ and the continued support you have given John throughout his career. He loved making music and playing his guitar. He found pleasure knowing that his music made people happy and bought them fond memories. He worked hard with many days in pain to finish the Replay album. There were times when he could barely pick up his guitar, but he refused to give up knowing he would disappoint fans. The hardest day for John was when he put his guitar in its case announcing his hands could no longer play.

During the last months of his life, John, Tony and Alan wrote new material. What the future holds for this is unclear at the time of this writing.

There is so much more we could say, but for now, we would like to grieve the loss of John.

God bless you all.

Jean, Lee and Paul xxx

If you have ever been inside the pizza parlor of the DNA Lounge, you may have noticed all the cool concert posters of bands who have graced the stages of the DNA Lounge. You might even see the four or five My Life With Thrill Kill Kult posters there. The DNA has a long history in San Francisco and I can remember spending many late nights in the late 80’s and 90’s. It has since become one of the favored venues by artists to perform.

We were excited to catch the return of My Life With Thrill Kill Kult as they made a stop in San Francisco for their “Spooky Tricks” Tour in support of their new album of the same title. It was an awesome night that started off with a spectacular set by San Jose symphonic metal band, Retconstruct. You can read more about Retconstruct here. Then there was a set by DJ Toxic Rainbow to get everyone in the dancing mood.

Then as My Life With Thrill Kill Kult took to the stage, the venue was packed and everyone was cheering them on. They put on an energetic, charismatic set that had everyone mesmerized and invigorated. Vocalist, Groovie Mann seduced the audience with his vocals and his sultry style. He has such a magnetic personality and infectious stage presence. He reminds me of an Iggy Pop/Jim Morrison hybrid, yet he has his own style that cannot be imitated. Buzz McCoy on keyboards and backing vocals elicits the magic in each song to compliment Groovie Mann.

Weston Halvorson is a fireball on his guitar and hidden under his hat, he makes it seem so easy. Yet, he careens around wielding his guitar and firing up the crowd. Mimi Star in her ferocious feline fashion purrs on her bass lines and holds the audience captive. Justin Thyme delivered another high powered set on his drums as he smiles to the crowd, letting everyone know that he truly loves to perform.

One thing is for sure, if you have not seen My Life With Thrill Kill Kult perform, make sure to get yourself to a show. They are just finishing up their Spooky Tricks Tour and you can pick up their new album on iTunes here. This band may have a 25+ year history but there is no signs of slowing down or letting up. They are just as intensely awesome as back in the 90’s! I will leave you with the photos of the night by our Rockin Ryan.

For the past three months we have been bringing to you our featured artists and bands for the 2014 Bottle Rock Napa Festival. The festival was a great success, very well organized, plenty of parking, shuttles, food vendors, water refilling and phone charging stations. We will continue to bring you our recap of this successful festival but first we wanted to bring you the Highlight of the 2014 Bottle Rock Napa Festival. I don’t think it comes as any surprise, that The Cure has been chosen as the highlight of this year’s festival.

The Cure played on Friday night and after a long day of great bands, good food and lots of fun. They started promptly at 7:30 and treated us to a nonstop 2 1/2 hour set. When I mean nonstop, I mean literally nonstop. There were no show breaks, or small talk. They were there to perform and did everything to insure that we all heard our personal favorites as well as some songs that haven’t played live in years!  Due to the strict sound ordinance, they had to have the sound turned off promptly at 10:00. I have no doubt that they could have gone on for another 2 hours.

The energy was intense and infectious as the crowd which ranged from youngsters, teens, young adults to seniors. Everyone was there to have a good time and to witness the magic of a Cure concert. I had the pleasure of seeing The Cure a couple times back in the 90’s and this concert was every bit as magical as those times. Robert Smith sounded just as sweet and captivating as he always did. The band was spot on and delivered studio quality sound. This was a full on rock show and kudos to all the hard working crew that made it happen. When I looked around the crowd, I saw a woman crying, she was in complete joy of the surreal moment. She and her friends were enjoying the moment as they exclaimed numerous times, how they couldn’t believe they were there to see The Cure!

That was the atmosphere all around, everyone was fueled with adrenaline, the crowd was filled and the night brought nostalgic moments to some, new memories to others but to all a wonderful time. You can check out our slide show of photographs from the night.

Last year we told you about a great new band, Figs Vision. Figs Vision is the musical collaboration by Gunner Sixx, son of Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue and Jordan Spoliansky.  You can read more about when they first started as well as interview with Jordan and Gunner  here.  Today, I wanted to give you an update and how Figs Vision is working on creating their first album. In addition, they have added Zig Zag and Storm to complete our band and bring our vision to a tangible place.  As they say, “We are a family and all love each other very god damn much.”

Figs Vision is now ready to record and release their full length album titled, “Dances“. They have started an Indiegogo campaign and you can help be part of the making of the album. You can visit their campaign page and see how your contribution can help fund the album as well as receive some cool merchandise and perks from the band! The album as they mention, “We have pulled together a bundle of our favorite songs that will complete a larger expression of art in the form of an album. We’ve decided to call it “Dances”.  Being fortunate enough to put out this record would mean ultimate satisfaction for our band and our personal lives.  It would be an achievement of the dreams we’ve had every night for as long as we can remember. It would bring meaning to every step of our journeys on this earth.”

As you know we always applaud bands who take the crowd sourcing path in order to fund their album because you truly get the album that the artist wants you to hear.  It is the best way for the artist to express his/her music, market the music they way they would like to see it done, all doing this on the time frame that is most suitable for them.  You can check out their Indiegogo video here:

Now you have to head on over to their Indiegogo campaign page and see which perk you are going to receive for your contribution. Maybe a t-shirt? private concert? your name tattooed? advanced signed CD? or how about at least some good juju. We can all use more of that.

Now that you know about Figs Vision, take a listen to them and fall in love with their music! Here is “New York Home” and “Make It”. Make sure to visit their social media pages so you can stay up to date on their music. Let’s all get ready for some new music and look forward to “Dances“.

Strange Talk were quite busy performing nine shows at SXSW this year and then they set out to tour with Sounds. Last night Melbourne, Australian alternative pop band, Strange Talk performed in San Francisco at the Regency Ballroom. These guys have a great new refreshing sound. They blend a bit of the eighties pop with a touch of 90’s electro and then wrapped into their own  edgy style.

Strange Talk is set to release their self-produced debut album Cast Away on April 29th via Wind-Up Records. All songs on the album were mixed by Tony Hoffer (M83, Phoenix) with the exception of “Climbing Walls,” “Eskimo Boy” and “Is It Real?” which were mixed by Eliot James (Bloc Party, Two Door Cinema Club). One thing is for sure, Strange Talk truly capture their studio sound and bring it to life on the stage. The crowd loved them and they captured the hearts of San Francisco.

One of the highlights was when they perfomed their new single, “Young Hearts”. I am absolutely in love with this song. It is an upbeat fun song with a catchy beat and a cool chorus. Check out this tribute video from Rockin Ryan which features photos and footage of their San Francisco set:

Band Members:

  • Stephen Docker – Vocals/Keys
  • Gerard Sidhu – Bass/Keys
  • Travis Constable – Drums
  • Gillan Gregory – Guitar/Keys

Pre-orders for Cast Away are available now on iTunes HERE. Those who pre-order will get six songs instantly including “Young Hearts,” as well as two exclusive bonus songs.  Pre-order the CD or limited edition double white vinyl from Amazon HERE and get the digital version added to your cloud player for free on April 29, 2014.  Exclusive merchandise and album pre-order bundles are also available through the band’s store HERE.

Gin Blossoms

Today our Bottle Rock Napa Featured Band is Gin Blossoms. Gin Blossoms has been one of my all time favorite bands and always reminds me of summertime.  I probably think of summer since I remember having my favorite Gin Blossoms Dusted cassette playing on my long summer drives back and forth to LA. I must have worn out that Cassette that summer of 1990. I remember playing them long before my friends hopped on board in 1991/1992 as they re-recorded several of the songs after signing to A&M Records and instantly grew in popularity.

Gin Blossoms’ songs are always catchy, fun and carefree. The perfect backdrop for any band. Their music has been described as alternative, melodic rock, pop, folk, and so much more. If I was to describe it I would say Gin Blossoms is like a fun in the sun summer day. If you could take the memories of good times spent with friends, young love, simply having a good time and feeling carefree; that is what Gin Blossoms sounds like. Of course, because those were the memories that I hold dear when Gin Blossoms was the playlist of my life.

Gin Blossoms have undergone many changes in the lineup but I am excited to see that the band is still out performing and playing all the fan favorites. They will definitely be a highlight for me at this year’s Bottle Rock Napa. Here is our quick feature:

Band Members:

  • Robin Wilson
  • Jesse Valenzuela
  • Scott Johnson
  • Bill Leen

Our very own San Francisco favorite singer/songrwriter Peter London has recently released his  new CD America .  Peter is an avid animal lover and has used his gift of music to raise awareness and funds for a refuge animal center through Pets in Need. The end result is that Peter has not only helped a great cause but has succeeded in creating what could be the ‘feel good’ album of the year.

The album takes you  on a primarily acoustic musical journey that brings you a variety of songs ranging from raw emotional tunes, sweet folk songs, modern rock to alternative rock tracks. One thing is for sure, through all the songs, each one will bring a smile to your face and warmth in your heart. Here are some of my favorites even though the whole album is fantastic from start to finish (including the bonus tracks!):

America starts right off with a great passion filled song and the vocals will grab you and embrace your soul. You can literally close your eyes and feel the music heighten all your senses as you take in each breath and feel the beauty of life.

Jenny is a beautiful song that spark’s a romantic edge but at the same time creates almost the warmth and innocence of that first crush.

Feel Good takes it up a notch as it is time to shake those hips and move around to the fun sexy beat. It is a fun flirty song that captures the fun in the sun attitude meshed with a catchy groove.

Can’t Let Go is another uptempo song that will have you singing along to the catchy tune and enjoy the vibrant guitars, definitely an energy inducing track!

The Acoustic Run Away  has this sweet slow mysterious intro, heavy deep in thought vocals set in and you can feel the lyrics as they wrap around you like a vine. Amazing song and I love the classic flamenco guitar in it, just gives me chills. It is a beautiful track that draws you in and engages you from start to finish.

She’s Going starts with an upbeat drum intro invites you and brings back my love for ’90s modern rock/alternative songs. This song really just takes me back to my free spirited days, it has an old style mod rock feel that I am smitten with.

It’s Alright  is one song that I can’t get out of my mind. I love the guitars and energy but even more so is the vocals that exude a flirty edge that you can’t help but fall in love with.  I love songs that captivate you and feed your soul, like this song.

Rain This is again that song, the perfect song. It is just magical as you feel the melody and the words dance around you and invite you to feel alive. If ever there was a song to paint a picture of bliss, this would be the song for me. It has incredible soul touching vocals and acoustically will take you to a higher dimension. You can check out Peter with Rain here:

I have told you earlier about the new album that Full Devil Jacket from Jackson, TN has been working hard on. Well the time has almost arrived for you to get that much anticipated album in your pretty little rockin hands!  Their album, Valley of Bones is set for a January 20th, 2014 release. I just got a first hand listen to the album and I need to tell you….. IT FUCKIN ROCKS!  From start to finish; AMAZING ALBUM!!

Valley of Bones

It might have been 12 years since their last release but if you have listened to them today, you wouldn’t have guessed it. They are focused, passionate and determined at bringing their big sound rock to your ears. Under the management of Southern Dirt Coalition, Full Devil Jacket put their passion into action and created an incredible album that everyone must be so proud of. The album was recorded with Justin Rimer (12 Stones) at Cross Trax in Memphis TN and includes many special guests like Zach Myers (Shinedown), Jeff Caughron (Jessta James), Paul McCoy (12 Stones),Justin Rimer (12 Stones), Jason Null (Saving Abel) and Evan Thomas (Ghost in the Machine).

I love it when I listen to a new for the first time and within the first 15 seconds, I am intrigued and excited for what the rest of the album will bring. Well, with Full Devil Jacket‘s Valley of Bones, it didn’t even take that long! Within the first 5 seconds, it grabs a hold of you and hold on for a hell of a ride.  The first track, Killers, is a bad ass song to start right off with and I can see that one being a heavy contender for the next single.

Of course, next is the awesome hit 7 Times Down that we have all fallen in love with. It rocks with with catchy lyrics and fierce guitars. You can’t help but move! 7 Times Down has rapidly gained attention as it has been added to 33 stations in the US and been played on Octane and Faction radio as well as 13 independent Internet radio stations. Everyone has been talking about that song. Their music brings a culmination of everything from Alice in Chains, PANTERA, Rob Zombie, Pearl Jam and so much more.

The album continues on with one favorite after another. You literally can’t go wrong with this one. So many times people head over and pick and choose songs when they buy from Itunes and this is not the album for that since you will find yourself buying every song!  So instead, head over to their site and get your pre-order in now!

Another standout from the album is Desert Floor,  which is brilliant and the vocals and lyrics, are just soul touching. Another song,  Picture Box Voodoo brings out a Rob Zombie-esque style but with more melodic alternative edge that I love. The guitar work in Time in the Flames is fierce and the cool riff brings it all together. All the songs are so well written and it makes you really appreciate the attention to detail this band put in to creating a complete work of art.  August is one of those songs that will literally wrap itself around you like a warm safe hug and give you hope.

Right after their album release, Full Devil Jacket will set out on touring and are already booked for three festivals. It won’t be long after, that we will get to catch them out on their Valley of Bones Tour. Make sure to visit their social media sites and keep up to date on the latest tour dates on their website  So get ready for Valley of Bones by Full Devil Jacket. The perfect way to start off 2014 with a spectacular album!

~ Crank it up loud, Marisol
